First Round, 24th Pick: Bjoern Werner - Defensive End, Florida State
It’s funny how your opinion of a draft pick can change the further away you get from the draft. Initially, just moments after the pick, I gave the Colts an A for selecting a highly talented playmaker to beef up their shoddy defense. But the more I analyze this pick, the more I wonder if it will work out. Werner has only ever played as a 4-3 defensive end and will be asked to switch to outside linebacker in the Colts’ 3-4 scheme. There’s no doubt Werner is talented but the position switch might prove to be a bad decision by Indianapolis. Grade: B
Third Round, 86th Pick: Hugh Thornton - Offensive Guard, Illinois
There’s no arguing that the Colts need to beef up the interior of their offensive line to better protect their young franchise quarterback, Andrew Luck. Thornton is a talented lineman whose value fits right around this pick, but there were better interior linemen still available at this time. Grade: B-
Fourth Round, 121st Pick: Khaled Holmes - Center, USC
I like Holmes and what he brings to the table, especially his ability to play center or either guard position. But if the Colts were really looking at taking a center, they could’ve gotten Brian Schwenke with their previous pick and used this pick to get a guard of near-equal value to Thornton. Grade: B-
Fifth Round, 139th pick (from Cleveland Browns): Montori Hughes - Defensive tackle, Tennessee-Martin
Like I’ve said before, Hughes was one of my favorite small-school prospects in this year’s draft. He’s a talented player that I thought would be gone by now. He’ll be able to come in and challenge for the starting nose tackle position right away. Grade: A
Sixth Round, 192nd Pick: John Boyett - Safety, Oregon
The Colts needed to address their secondary here, and missed out on Bacarri Rambo by one pick. Boyett is a talented player with a lot of potential. With some refinement, he could push for a starting job by the 2014 season. Grade: B
Seventh Round, 230th Pick: Kerwynn Williams - Running Back, Utah State
Apparently the Colts feel like Donald Brown isn’t the right player to pair with Vick Ballard long term, so they grabbed the best running back still available. Grade: B-
Seventh Round, 254th Pick: Justice Cunningham - Tight End, South Carolina
Ah, the famed “Mr Irrelevant” of the 2013 NFL Draft. Cunningham is now the fifth tight end on Indianapolis’ roster and I just don’t see how he fits into the plan. Plus, being the very last pick in the draft, it’s likely Cunningham won’t even make the final 53 man roster. Grade: C
Final Grade: B- (82 percent)
