Green Bay Packers Looking for a Faster-Paced Offense

The Green Bay Packers ranked 21st in the NFL with an average of 62.9 offensive plays per game last year. Considering the elite-level talent on the team's offense, it seems to be a waste that they wouldn't rank any higher on that list. After all, the Philadelphia Eagles, New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts are the teams that ranked in the top three in this category. All three have high-powered offenses.

Give Aaron Rodgers more opportunities to toss the ball around the playground, and he would make that much more of an impact on the game.

So it shouldn't be considered too much of a surprise that the Packers are looking create a faster-paced offense during camp and in the preseason. Green Bay ran a ridiculous 33 offensive plays in the first quarter of their preseason opener against the New England Patriots. Going with a no-huddle attack, this up-tempo offense put up two drives of 10-plus plays in the initial stanza alone. And while Rodgers finished his night without a touchdown pass, the Packers looked comfortable going with a different offensive philosophy than we have seen in the past.

None of this is a sign that Green Bay is changing up its playbook. Wide receiver Randall Cobb indicated as much in talking about the new pace on Monday. He also made sure to note that Green Bay's red-zone struggles were more about the team running base plays instead of drawing up specific packages for the Patriots. This is obviously something that will change as the team plays matchups in the regular season.

However, it doesn't appear that the Packers up-tempo philosophy will be simply a preseason outlier. If that's the case, we can expect a higher volume of fantasy productivity from Rodgers and company. Philadelphia led the NFL with an average of 70.4 plays per game. If the Packers are able to match that number, it would mean about 130 more offensive plays in 2015.
