When considering drafting San Francisco 49ers’ mobile quarterback Colin Kaepernick to your fantasy team in 2015, there are multiple factors to consider.
Kaepernick finished the 2014 fantasy season ranking 16th in fantasy points among his fellow quarterbacks. With that being said, he was surely drafted higher by most than what he rewarded overall week to week. Wildly inconsistent, had Kaepernick offering anywhere from 2.5 to 29.4 fantasy points at each side of the spectrum. Clearly he fits the term high risk, high reward.
2014 had Kaepernick tallying up the second-most quarterback rushing yards with 639, so this should remain something owners of Kaepernick in 2015 can depend upon for some of their fantasy points. Up also in 2014 versus his prior season were Kaepernick’s passing completion rate by 2.1 percent and his passing yards by nearly 200. The numbers that hurt Kaepernick and tanked your team on occasion, however, were an increase in interceptions and a decrease in touchdowns.
The benefit to drafting Kaepernick in 2015 is that he will likely be available in much later draft rounds than he was in 2014 due to his ranking slipping seven places this past year. This means you can really stack your roster with quality running backs and wide receivers while others reach for quarterbacks in earlier rounds.
Working under a new coach in 2015 and training in the offseason in a program designed by Kurt Warner and quarterback coaches could set the foundation to see some improvement out of Kaepernick when the fall season begins.
Should Kaepernick be able to increase those passing yards by at least a few hundred, keep piling up the rushing yards and throw a handful more touchdowns, his fantasy points stand to improve in 2015.
The best case scenario for 2015 is drafting Kaepernick in round 10 or after with the hope that he becomes more consistent and regains his ranking as a top 10 quarterback when the fantasy season is done.
