Houston Texans Release Brian Hoyer

Former Houston Texans quarterback Brian Hoyer's fate was sealed the minute the team signed Brock Osweiler. But it didn't become official until Sunday, when it was announced that Hoyer had been released and become a free agent.

Hoyer appeared in 11 games for the Texans last season, taking the job early from Ryan Mallett. Over 11 games, Hoyer completed 60.7 percent of his 369 passing attempts, throwing for 2,607 passing yards, 19 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

He really has never been a competent every-week starter who teams can rely on for consistent play over a 16-game season, but he can fill-in for a few weeks as a starter and makes for a good backup option. Which makes sense for a team like the Pittsburgh Steelers who Jason La Ca Canfora reported has interest in Hoyer. He would serve as a good insurance plan behind Ben Roethlisberger, who missed four games last season.

Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle also reported the Steelers having interest along with the New York Jets. One thing is for certain, Hoyer will have plenty of job offers to choose from on the open market.
