It's not too often that a NFL quarterback is released the same year that he actually started a game for his team. For former Houston Texans quarterback Ryan Mallett, he went from starting a game for the team to being released within a three-week span.
Struggling to an extent on the field this season, Mallett's release from the Texans had more to do with off-field issues than anything else.
Mallett had missed practice during training camp, just a few days after the Texans named Brian Hoyer the starting quarterback. He then overslept this weekend, which forced him to miss the team's flight to Miami and have to take a commercial flight for the road game.
It had previously been reported that head coach Bill O'Brien wanted to release Mallett immediately after Sunday's blowout loss to the Miami Dolphins. However, there seemed to be a disagreement between O'Brien and general manager Rick Smith — something that was settled with Tuesday's news of Mallett's release.
In six games (four starts) this season, Mallett completed 53.1 percent of his passes for 770 yards with three touchdowns and four interceptions.
It is being reported that Houston will bring back T.J. Yates to be Hoyer's primary backup.
