Is Ryan Mathews a Gem in the Making?

Philadelphia Eagles running back Ryan Mathews attempted 22 rushes in the team's season opening win over the Cleveland Browns. He put up 77 yards and a score on those attempts. No other Eagles running back ran the ball more than five times.

For Mathews, it was the most he's touched the ball since late September of last season when he tallied 108 yards and a score on 24 carries against the New York Jets.

It sure looks like the Eagles are relying on a heavy workload for Mathews this season, which could very well create some tremendous fantasy value for the previously enigmatic running back.

Consider this. Sunday represented just the second time since the end of the 2013 season that Mathews has put up 20-plus rush attempts. The last six times Mathews has hit this plateau, he's averaging 110 yards and a score per game. True top-five fantasy numbers there.

Eagles head coach Doug Pederson indicated on Thursday that the team is going to continue relying on Mathews to be a workhorse in the backfield. That makes a ton of sense with rookie Carson Wentz under center. It should also make Mathews a consistent top-10 fantasy running back, especially given Wentz's ability to push defenses off the line with his long-ball accuracy.
