The Philadelphia Eagles released DeSean Jackson and that opened up a huge hole at the wide receiver position. In Philadelphia's speedy offense, Jackson was a versatile weapon who will be a hard one to replace. Even after re-signing Jeremy Maclin and Riley Cooper in free agency, the Eagles made it clear that they wanted to upgrade the wide receiver position by drafting Jordan Matthews in the second round and Josh Huff in the third round.
While both have a ton of potential, they are extremely different players. Matthews is the prototypical wide receiver in today's NFL, as he has a great combination of size and speed. Matthews has drawn comparisons to Alshon Jeffery for his ability to go up and get he ball. Huff, on the other hand, is a much smaller receiver who thrives in open space. Huff also has a game-changing speed which is just another reason why he could be so successful in the Eagles' offense.
In my opinion, Matthews is the more complete player, but Huff in this offense is too good to pass up on. Huff will be used as an offensive weapon in this offense, as he has the ability to create mismatches across the defense. By having Huff on the field, it creates a bunch of problems for defenses to handle with. Huff could also be used in the backfield. That's how versatile and explosive he is.
Another thing to remember is that Huff was one of Chip Kelly's top recruits at Oregon. Even though Kelly made the difficult transition from college to the NFL, he brought his offense with him. That being said, Huff is not new to Kelly's system and the sky is the limit for the ex-Duck in this system. The combination of Huff and Matthews could very well fill the void Jackson left.
