St. Louis Rams rookie running back Todd Gurley enters Sunday's action as FanDuel's eighth-most expensive running back. That's mighty high expectations for someone who just starting seeing regular touches after tearing his ACL last year at Georgia.
At least this week, those expectations seem warranted.
Gurley, the 10th overall pick in May's draft, made his regular season debut against the Pittsburgh Steelers back in Week 3 — going for nine yards on six attempts. Not really a featured asset in that game, the goal for St. Louis was to give him some live-game action before relying on him moving forward.
It's a plan that has paid off a great deal over the past couple games.
After putting up 147 yards on 19 rushes against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 4, Gurley went for 159 yards on a whopping 30 attempts against the Green Bay Packers in Week 5. Now coming off a bye, the former Heisman candidate looks primed for another impact performance.
Gurley's combined yardage total of 306 yards in the Rams' past two games came against defenses that rank outside of the bottom 12 against fantasy running backs on the season. In fact, his 147-yard outing was against a Cardinals unit that's currently in the top 12 in that category.
The Rams will now face off with a Cleveland Browns defense that has been absolutely disastrous against the run this year. Now only has Cleveland yielded the fifth-most fantasy points to running backs, it ranks dead last in run defense at 141.6 yards per game and is allowing 4.5 yards per attempt.
Just a couple hundred dollars more than the likes of Doug Martin, Frank Gore and Justin Forsett, Gurley represents unmatched upside here.
Interestingly, the name recognition hasn't yet taking off within the DFS circles. This means that if you are rostering Gurley, you will be in the small minority — an indication that if he goes off, you will likely find a way to cash in.
This makes Gurley a must start in FanDuel contests.
