Last year a record 74 underclassmen declared for the draft and dropped their final years of eligibility. This year, the number of underclassmen to declare is fast approaching that. As of now over 60 underclassmen have already declared and the deadline is still over a week away, January 15th. Right now the draft is crowded with incredibly talented underclassmen wide receivers (at least15 have declared so far) and more are sure to come.
Plenty of offensive players have declared so far, and the more players that declare, the more exciting this time of year gets. Several big name underclassmen quarterbacks have declared, including projected first-round quarterbacks Teddy Bridgewater, Blake Bortles, and Johnny Manziel. This draft projects to be very offensive heavy, with those quarterbacks and all the wide-receivers that have declared. Along with the receivers and quarterbacks, several running backs have declared including Bishop Sankey, Lache Seastrunk, and Storm Johnson.
At this point most of the players that are going to declare have, particularly now since the college football season is over. Most players tend to declare after their last game, so with no more games to be played, it would seem that from this point on very few players will be declaring. A few players that haven’t declared but still very well could are:
David Yankey: The standout Stanford guard has had a great career so far and although Stanford lost the Rose Bowl, I think he’s likely to declare. Ranked as the top guard eligible for the draft by many, it won’t be a shock for him to forgo his last season to take the next step.
Alabama Underclassmen: Several of the bigger names at Alabama have yet to make their decision on whether they want to take the next step, or attempt at another national championship. The top players yet to declare their intentions are Cyrus Kouandjio, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, and Adrian Hubbard. Right now I’d project Hubbard and Clinton-Dix as locks to declare but Kouandjio is more of a question mark. Some see him as a first round pick, and almost everyone sees him as at least a third round pick. With the potential to go so early I wouldn’t be surprised to see him declare. With a rough showing in the Sugar Bowl, he may not want to Alabama on a bad note.
All players yet to declare, will make their decision soon, so it’s worth monitoring over the next week or so. College football season is over, and with the super bowl less than a month away, it’s almost draft season for all 32 NFL teams. More than likely your team is officially in draft mode already, unless you’re rooting for one of the remaining eight teams still vying for a shot at the Super Bowl.
