Most Surprising Fantasy Running Backs Through Three Weeks

1. DeMarco Murray, Tennessee Titans

There's no one that comes close to this distinction. Murray was almost literally given away by the Philadelphia Eagles for a dozen two-week old eggs. They didn't want him there. He was a disaster in Philadelphia last season. And in reality, Tennessee didn't show a ton of confidence in Murray after trading for him. Remember, they selected reigning Heisman winner Derrick Henry in the second round of this year's draft.

Through three weeks, Murray has gone on to prove all the skeptics wrong. He's the top fantasy running back, he's averaging 6.5 yards per touch and has touched the ball a whopping 58 times in three games. In fact, Murray is on pace for over 2,000 total yards and 16 scores this season.

Consistency hasn't been an issue here either. He finished no worse than ninth in fantasy points among running backs through three weeks. It truly is stunning to see what Murray has done given that he wasn't being relied on as much more than a FLEX or bench option in preseason drafts.

2. LeGarrette Blount, New England Patriots

With Tom Brady suspended, Blount has picked up the slack big time for the Patriots in the first three games. Whether that rings true once Brady returns after four games remains to be seen. What we do know is that the Patriots have a clear-cut No. 1 running back for the first time since Cory Dillon was dominating the backfield at Gillette.

Through three games, Blount is averaging nearly 100 rushing yards per game and has tallied a ridiculous four touchdowns. In fact, he leads the NFL in rush attempts and rushing yards heading into Week 4.

Unfortunately, there's no real reason to believe Blount will keep this up. Nearly 42 percent of his fantasy points came last week when he put up two touchdowns against the Houston Texans. He also provides absolutely nothing from a PRR standpoint with zero catches thus far this season. Add in Brady's return and a focus on the passing game, and there's no reason to expect a massive down tick in production here. If you're given a good offer for Blount, it's our recommendation that you sell high. After all, it's not like you spent an early-round pick on him in the first place. None of this is meant to mitigate what Blount has done. He is among the most-surprising fantasy performers through three weeks.

Carlos Hyde, San Francisco 49ers

There's a whole heck of a lot to look at here. Hyde exists in an offense that has no real threat at the quarterback position. Heck, even Seattle Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett said as much following San Francisco's blowout loss last week. Despite this, Hyde still finds himself as the seventh-best fantasy running back heading into Week 4.

Also important to note here, San Francisco has taken on three stout run-stopping defensive lines in the form of the Los Angeles Rams, Carolina Panthers and Seattle Seahawks in the first three weeks. Hyde's still averaging four yards per touch and 83 yards per game. Add in four rushing touchdowns, and it's clear he has a knack for the end zone. Set to take on lesser opponents moving, look for Hyde to continue being a nice little RB1 option.
