New York Giants Scouting Notebook: Taylor Lewan

Taylor Lewan

Offensive Tackle

Michigan

It seemed like Taylor Lewan would fall to the second round after a poor showing in the 2013 college football season. That thought fell out the window after Lewan posted incredible numbers for a tackle at the 2014 NFL Scouting Combine. Lewan posted the fastest 4-time for a tackle at 4.87 seconds, and he also put up 29 reps on the bench press. Lewan showed many why he has a future in the NFL.

It's not often to find a tackle who is 6'7", 310 pounds, running a 40-yard dash at that time. He is not a finished product, but he has an arsenal of skills that allow him to beat his opponents one on one. Many teams in this year's draft need a blindside tackle, and Lewan is talented enough to be just that at the next level.

How Lewan Fits With the Giants

The New York Giants need to upgrade their offensive line, and Lewan has shown the potential to play as a guard in the NFL. Lewan has been linked to the Giants because he shows the ability to be a long-term starter for this team. The Giants signed Will Beatty to an extension, but he has problems with taking on bull rush moves against defensive ends. Regardless, Lewan could play across this offensive line without a problem.

Potential Impact as a Rookie

Offensive linemen usually come in and start right away in the NFL. Lewan would be another guy that could come in and become a starter. With some NFL seasoning, Lewan could become a perennial Pro Bowler because of his frame and his athleticism.

What Lewan Does Well

To play on the left side for the Michigan Wolverines, Lewan added almost 50 pounds of muscle on to go at it against defensive ends in the Big Ten. It's safe to say that Lewan looks the part. He slides extremely well, and he has long arms that allow him to keep space between him and the defender. Lewan is athletic enough to get to the second level in the ground game too.

What Lewan Struggles With

In 2013, Lewan had a ton of trouble staying with quick defensive ends. Often at times, Lewan was stood up and pushed back by his opponents. In the NFL, Lewan will need to find a way to improve his technique. If he can do this, Lewan could be something special. He has the athleticism, he just needs to improve his craft and he will become a finished product.
