The NFC West is getting closer and closer to a done deal. The Arizona Cardinals keep winning while the other teams fall further behind. The Cardinals have a three game lead, but with six games left, there’s still a lot of football left to be played. Anything can happen. Here’s a preview of all the matchups in the NFC West this week:
Arizona Cardinals at Seattle Seahawks, Sunday 4:05PM EST
The Arizona Cardinals keep finding themselves in close games and keep finding ways to win. They currently have the best record in the entire NFL and don’t look ready to slow down. The Seahawks, on the other hand, are coming off a tough loss on the road to the Kansas City Chiefs.
This game is going to come down to whether or not the Seahawks are able to establish their run game against the Cardinals. According the PFF (subscription), the Seahawks have the best run game in the league behind running back Marshawn Lynch. To counter, the Cardinals have the ninth best run defense in the league. On the other side of the ball the Cardinals have been reliant on deep passes. The Cardinals have had three quarterbacks so far this season; Carson Palmer, Drew Stanton, and Logan Thomas. Between all of them they have a total of 17 touchdowns. Eight of those touchdowns were for 20 or more yards. So if the Seahawks can establish the run and prevent any long touchdowns, they should be able to win this game and gain some ground in the division. Another factor is that this game is in Seattle, and although their home field advantage isn’t what it was last season, it still makes a difference. I think the Seahawks win this game by a field goal.
St. Louis Rams at San Diego Chargers, Sunday 4:05PM EST
Both the Chargers and the Rams are coming off of wins, but how each team won couldn’t be any different. The Rams shocked the whole NFL by beating Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos while the Chargers barely squeaked out a win at home against the lowly Oakland Raiders. With these teams’ arrows seemingly pointing in different directions, it’ll be interesting to see how it plays out.
If the Chargers want to have any chance at winning this game they’re going to need their offensive line to step up in a big way. According to PFF, the Chargers’ offensive line is the second worst in the league in both pass and run blocking. This is something that needs to get fixed quickly, especially when they’re about to go up against possibly the best defensive line in football. The Rams’ defensive line has finally started to hit their stride, recording two sacks, five hits on the quarterback, eight quarterback hurries, and four batted passes at the line of scrimmage last week against Manning. Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers is also suffering from a pretty sever rib injury that will absolutely get worse if his line doesn’t protect him this week. At this point in time, neither of these two teams have a particularly good offense. The biggest difference is how the Rams’ defense is playing and the pressure they’ve been able to get on quarterbacks lately. Couple that with the injury Rivers is dealing with, it could be a long a painful day for Rivers and the Chargers. I think the Rams win this one by a field goal.
Washington Redskins at San Francisco 49ers, Sunday 4:25 EST
The Washington Redskins are an absolute dumpster fire. There’s no way around that. They had an embarrassing loss at home to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and their franchise quarterback, Robert Griffin III, proceeded to throw his teammates under the bus after the loss. On top of that, their head coach, Jay Gruden, came out in a press conference the next day and basically reprimanded his quarterback in public. To make things worse, the Redskins have to go into San Francisco and play a 49ers team that is starting to get some of their key pieces back and healthy.
On defense, the 49ers should have quite a day with their pass rush. This will be the second game back from suspension for outside linebacker Aldon Smith and last week against the New York Giants Smith and rookie outside linebacker Aaron Lynch had quite a day getting pressure on quarterback Eli Manning. At one point the Giants had to triple team Smith. Nose tackle Glenn Dorsey will likely be activated as well to add depth to their defensive line. On offense, the story remains the same for the 49ers. They need to run the ball with Frank Gore and build their pass game from there. Michael Crabtree is coming off possibly his best game of the year so look for the 49ers to try and get him involved even more involved this game. The Redskins have the fourth worst overall defense according to PFF and the third worst run defense along with the second worst pass coverage. If the 49ers can keep Colin Kaepernick upright against their pass rush, this could be the “get right game” the 49ers’ offense has needed. I expect the 49ers to win this game by multiple touchdowns.
