NFL Draft Fantasy Slant: Los Angeles Chargers Select WR Mike Williams

Player: Mike Williams

Position: Wide Receiver

College: Clemson

Draft Review:

One of the bigger surprises from the first round of the draft, the Los Angeles Chargers pulled out the wildcard. With needs on defense and a top safety available, the Chargers opted to take the best available receiver on the board. Williams, who played a critical role in Clemson's championship offense and came back from a scary neck injury, finds himself in lovely Los Angeles.

Williams returned from a career-threatening injury in 2015, to be Deshaun Watson's favorite target last season and a season that vaulted his draft stock. The 22-year-old receiver dominated his college competition last season with 98 receptions, 1,361 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns. His 94-yard yard, one-touchdown performance in the championship win over Alabama, followed by his sub-4.6 40-yard dash at Clemson's Pro Day helped solidify his stock and landed him in the top-10.

What the Scouts Say:

"Williams looks the part of a WR1 and has shown an ability to work all three levels of the field after coming back from his 2015 neck injury. Williams is tough enough to be a high-volume target while working the middle of the field and his size and ball skills make him a formidable foe in the end zone. He'll have to be coached up with his routes and releases, but he has the talent to become a big safety blanket for a young quarterback."

NFL Media

Standing at 6'4" and with the speed to go with it, Williams is the wide receiver you want to go down the field and lob up the jumpballs to. His game is built on physicality and winning with size, though his route running is solid enough that he can work some of the shorter routes. But this pick for Los Angeles is all about having that monster who kills defensive backs in the air and can also win inside the red zone. While he isn't great at creating separation from defensive backs, which will become more of an issue at the NFL, his dominant trait will work very well at the NFL level and is exactly why the Chargers saw him at seven and took him.

Depth Chart Competition:

This is where the problem many had comes from. Los Angeles boasts Keenan Allen, Tyrell Williams and Travis Benjamin as its top three wide receivers, each who possess a different skill. Of course, there's also risk with each of them as Allen continues to rehab in his recovery from a torn ACL, Benjamin battled injuries last season and Tyrell is in a contract year.

Out of the gate, if everyone is healthy, Williams doesn't figure to see a significant role right away. He is on a loaded offense with a great running back in Melvin Gordon, San Diego's trio of wide receivers who know the offense and two quality tight ends in Hunter Henry and Antonio Gates. While Philip Rivers loves to throw the football, there are so many mouths to feed and this is still a system it will take time for Williams to learn and chemistry that needs to be built with Rivers.

Fantasy Outlook:

You will not want to draft Mike Williams in non-keeper leagues. As mention in the depth chart section, there are just too many mouths on the Chargers' offense that will need shares of the football and only a percentage of the leftovers will be there for the rookie wide receiver. This could change between now and August if Allen's recovery is slow or Benjamin suffers an injury in training camp and misses significant time.

But there is upside in dynasty and it's why he will remain a top-five selection in most dynasty drafts. Williams might not be on the level of a Corey Davis, but he should be a touchdown eater who can also make some 20-plus yard plays because of his jump ball ability. His route running will improve with help of NFL coaching, just as they helped Tyrell Williams develop, and that will raise Mike's ceiling even further. Get a few shares of Williams in your dynasty leagues, because it will be a fun ride for many years to come.
