NFL Week 2: Previewing the AFC West

Week 1 has come and gone, but what a week it was for the AFC West.  Peyton Manning tied the NFL single game touchdown  record at seven against the Baltimore Ravens, Terrelle Pryor and the Raiders showed much improvement as they nearly upset the Indianapolis Colts, the Kansas City Chiefs routed the Jacksonville Jaguars, and the San Diego Chargers showed impressive play against a good Houston Texans team.  Football is in full swing, and Week 2 looks to be just as exciting.

The 1-0 Broncos will travel to New York to take on the 0-1 Giants in the battle of the Manning brothers.  During the offseason, these two created quite the music video with “Football on Your Phone,” but now they will go head to head in this Week 2 matchup.  The Giants were very unimpressive in their season debut as they lost to the Dallas Cowboys.  The Broncos on the other hand, played extremely well against the Ravens as Manning had a career game as he threw for 462 yards with seven touchdowns.  The Broncos defense also played well as they got two interceptions from Joe Flacco.  This week against the Giants, expect the Broncos and Peyton to have another great game.  Last week, Manning targeted  Wes Welker often, proving what a great addition he was to this already good team.  This should be a good game as it’s always fun to see the Manning brothers battle it out on the field.

The 0-1 Oakland Raiders host the 0-1 Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.  The Raiders showed they can and will compete this season as they nearly left Indy with a W, but instead lost 21-17.  Terrelle Pryor showed improvement as he threw for 217 yards with a touchdown and two crucial picks, but he did also rush for 112 yards; scrambling and making plays.  Rod Streater had a nice game for Oakland, as well.  The Raiders were expected to lose by a lot, but instead they showed promise and battled through the whole game.  This week should be an easy win for the Raiders as the Jags come to Oakland.  Jacksonville was only able to score two points on a safety against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 1.  The Raiders continue to get healthier and with health and experience, they will improve as the season progresses.  Pryor took blame for last week's loss, as he made some mistakes, but as a young quarterback he needs to turn the mental mistakes into a learning experience and get better every week.  He has the potential and that’s exactly what he’ll do.  Expect a big game from Pryor, both passing and rushing.  A lot of positives can be taken from Week 1.  The Raiders would love to be 1-1 heading into Week 3 against the Broncos, and they should be.

The 1-0 Kansas City Chiefs will host the 1-0 Dallas Cowboys this week.  In his regular season Chiefs debut, Alex Smith threw for 173 yards with two touchdowns and zero interceptions.  Granted, it was against possibly the worst team in the league, but the Chiefs got the win.  The Cowboys played a messy game against the Giants on Sunday night, but in the end were able to settle down and take the game.  This will be a tough game for Kansas City, as Dallas is a good team with a talented roster.  The Chiefs are an improved team and this should be a good, close game.

The Chargers will travel to Philly to take on the 1-0 Eagles.  Last week they hosted the Houston Texans on Monday Night Football, in what was a very exciting game.  The Chargers have a new regime and are moving in a new direction as they played extremely well against a good, solid, playoff caliber team.  Philip Rivers looked good as he threw for 195 yards with four touchdowns and one interceptions, an area where he’s struggled the last couple seasons.  The defense also played well and held off the Texans offense for a while, but in the end the Texans were able to score 24 points in the last two quarters to overtake the Chargers.  This week they go to Philly who are coming off a nice win against the Washington Redskins.  Michael Vick played well as he threw for 203 yards with two touchdowns and also rushed for 54 yards.  The Chargers will have to work hard to contain Vick as he can throw and run when needed.  Again, this is expected to be a close game, but the Chargers defense can’t fall off in the second half, and San Diego will need another good start by Rivers throughout the whole game.

In Week 1, the AFC West teams showed they have talent this year and they are all here to compete.  Many changes within each team, and they’ve paid off thus far.  Week 2 should be another good week in the AFC West as this should be an interesting season.
