NFL Week 4 Preview: Eagles at 49ers

Few would have predicted the starts that the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers kicked off their respective seasons with. Chip Kelly’s Eagles are undefeated after three games, and will take a trip west to take on the 49ers who have managed just one victory in the same span.

San Francisco’s workhorse running back, Frank Gore I finding 31 is no kind age to his position, while his replacement to be, Carlos Hyde is making the most of his touches averaging 4.5 yards per clip. Philadelphia is no slouch against the run, but will the 49ers be able to find a rhythm in the passing game?

With Vernon Davis’s status uncertain for Sunday’s game by the bay, the 49ers will have to turn to either Michael Crabtree or Anquan Boldin to stretch the field. This was an area the team struggled mightily in its loss to the Arizona Cardinals. While Colin Kaepernick’s elusiveness has been the glue holding this offense together, the team will have to be more creative on offense to outclass Billy Davis, Philadelphia’s defensive coordinator.

On the other side, we find the 3-0 Philadelphia Eagles who have not had the same success running the ball in 2014 as they had a season ago. Now with three starters out on the offensive line due to injury or suspension, the onus is on Nick Foles to produce in what is likely his team’s toughest test to date.

The Eagles have found succes on offense using their fast-paced and balanced system. Getting Darren Sproles involved alongside Zach Ertz and Jordan Matthews has turned Chip Kelly's offense into a matchup nightmare for opposing coordinators. Philadelphia must continue to spread the love if they hope to earn the upset win in San Francisco.

That being said, the 49ers defense is a far cry from what it was a season ago as well. NaVorro Bowman and Aldon Smith will be unavailable Sunday and for much of the season, and thus the team has struggled stopping electric offenses. Patrick Willis needs some help stopping LeSean McCoy or this will be another long day for Jim Harbaugh and company.

While Philadelphia is the hot team, San Francisco simply needs this win more. Probably the more talented team overall, the 49ers will take this game at home, and get back to even keel.
