In what has to be considered a stunning move, the Philadelphia Eagles announced on Tuesday that they have fired head coach Chip Kelly.
What's so surprising about this move is the fact that Philadelphia gave Kelly control of the team's player personnel department less than a year ago — meaning that something really bad had to go down behind the scenes this season.
On the field, Philadelphia has been an absolute disaster this year. After Kelly parted ways with a ton of Pro Bowl performers, the team enters Week 17 with a 6-9 record and completely out of the playoff race.
This comes on the heels of the team finishing with 10 wins in each of Kelly's first two seasons as its head coach.
Rumors of rifts with current and former Eagles players may have played a role in the decision. Though, Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie hinted at other issues within the organization:
Regardless of the drama, the goal is clear here for Philadelphia. Kelly took over a four-win team and led it to two consecutive 10-win campaigns prior to a downturn this season.
The team now needs to find an upgrade over a guy that was the toast of the organization just a few short months ago. That's not going to be an easy task.
