Power Ranking the AFC West Heading Into the Draft

This has been a very eventful offseason thus far for AFC West teams. Key free agent acquisitions have been made for teams in contention, but there is still work to be done as the draft approaches. Good teams build through the draft and that is just what these four teams will look to do come draft day.

Here’s how the AFC West ranks with draft day approaching.

1. Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs will look to build off a very impressive 2015 season in which they earned a Wild Card spot and advanced to the Divisional round. The Chiefs bounced back from a five game losing streak and the loss of top running back Jamaal Charles to make the best out of their season.

This free agency the Chiefs were able to retain Eric Berry who is a top corner in the league and a very important key to their defense.

The offensive line has been a concern for the Chiefs the past few years, with Alex Smith having to learn to work under heavy pressure, so in an effort to bolster the offensive line, they added Mitchell Schwartz.

KC’s struggles at the wide receiver position are well known around the league, and while the addition of Jeremy Maclin last offseason helped, building a receiving corp is vital to the offense.

The Chiefs were able to sign Rod Streater via free agency to help add to Smith’s offensive targets. Streater spent three years in Oakland and was a solid receiver on a team with not much star power.

The Chiefs are also losing two draft picks as their punishment for illegal tampering with Maclin last offseason.

KC has a lot of talent they are building off of, which should make for a very exciting season ahead for both the Chiefs and this division as a whole.

2. Oakland Raiders

A sight for sore eyes when it comes to Raider Nation. It has been quite awhile since this franchise was even in the discussion at a shot at a division title, but this is the year.

Last season, the Raiders made serious strides that didn’t always translate to the win column. However, each game, except Week 1, the Raiders developed their young players and left strong performances on the field creating some hype along the way.

Following a 7-9 record and third place in the West, General Manager Reggie McKenzie and company sought out top free agents and were able to bring a few to the dark side. The pass rush is expected to be even better with the addition of Bruce Irvin, and the secondary received a much needed boost with the addition of Sean Smith.

A quarterback is only as good as his offensive line, and, well, the Raiders have built a brick wall in front of quarterback Derek Carr.

Despite these additions the Raiders still have a few pieces to the puzzle missing. Offense has a solid foundation and will only blossom following last season. While Oakland could still use another running back, defense is what needs the most work in the backfield.

The Raiders continue to build and they will benefit from the draft as well as their fellow AFC West teams losing out on some key players this offseason.

3. Denver Broncos

The defending Super Bowl Champs will have their work cut out for them against their division rivals this year, mostly because their solution at quarterback following Peyton Manning’s retirement is a questionable one.

Denver acquired Mark Sanchez to compete for the starting position, and thus far have not signed anyone else. Sanchez has had his known troubles on the field, and despite one of the best defenses in football, their offense will take a serious hit.

In 75 games played, Sanchez has 84 interceptions and 30 fumbles with 86 touchdowns. While he has been on a few teams that have struggled, the Broncos have talent, but no matter how good a defense is, the offense needs to be efficient, eat up the clock, and put points on the board.

There was talk of the Broncos interest in Colin Kaepernick, but talk is cheap and nothing beyond an interest has been reported.

Regardless, this is going to be a very different looking offense for the Broncos, and with their peers making moves bringing in key pieces to make them serious competitors, a lot of responsibility falls on this offense.

4. San Diego Chargers

The Chargers have done nothing special this offseason, and while they will have high draft picks, their team overall is the last of the bunch when it comes to the AFC West.

Sure, Philip Rivers will have top target Antonio Gates, but that only goes so far. Their offense has struggled, and the offensive line continues to be an issue constantly riddled with injury.

Defensively, they aren’t on the same level within this division and will struggle again this season.

Against their rivals last season, the Bolts were 0-6. With the other teams making strides, the Chargers seem to stay put.
