There were points to be had at the quarterback position during Week 2 of the NFL season. All said, eight different quarterbacks threw three-plus touchdowns with both Cam Newton and Philip Rivers tossing four scores in their team's wins.
Some quarterbacks also put up what have to be considered fantasy duds. After tallying up a career-best performance last week, Kansas City Chiefs signal caller Alex Smith recorded a grand total of 3.6 fantasy points in a loss to the Houston Texans. Meanwhile, a hobbled Russell Wilson was not able to get it going against the Los Angeles Rams, putting up less than 10 fantasy points. It was the first time since the end of the 2014 season that Wilson failed to throw a touchdown pass.
You want to know something funny? By virtue of Wilson's struggles, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Blaine Gabbert now possesses the longest active streak with at least one touchdown pass in a game.
Side note. Gabbert somehow finished Sunday's action as a QB1 option. How? Well, that's anyone's guess, because he's just not that good at this football thing.
If you had Sam Bradford putting up better numbers than Aaron Rodgers and leading his Minnesota Vikings to victory over the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, you were probably alone.
But that's exactly what happened. Bradford completed 22-of-31 passes for 286 yards with two scores and zero interceptions in the win. Meanwhile, Rodgers tallied 213 yards with two total touchdowns and two turnovers. Bradford finished as a top end QB2 while Rodgers sat one spot behind him.
The biggest takeaway from Sunday's NFL action, including the Vikings' win, had to be injuries. So many fantasy relevant players went down, none more so than Minnesota running back Adrian Peterson.
Peterson had to be helped off the field with a knee injury, and the Vikings were conductin ACL stability tests in the training room. Peterson is set for an MRI on Monday.
He was just one of a multitude of players to go down with injury. We detailed all the injuries in an article earlier today.
On a brighter note, tight ends absolutely dominated the fantasy landscape on Sunday with 10 different players at this position going for 10-plus points. That's an absurd amount given that only six hit the double-digit plateau last week. Among the most surprising was 49ers tight end Vance McDonald, who we had as a top end play this week. He caught just one pass, but it went for 75 yards and a touchdown. Despite boasting only three catches on five targets this season, McDonald is the No. 7 fantasy tight end head into Week 3.
Also surprising the masses, Dennis Pitta of the Baltimore Ravens made his presence known in the fantasy community after a three-year injury-plagued hiatus. He caught nine of the 12 Joe Flacco passes thrown in his direction for 102 yards. Pitta represents a tremendous potential add in 12-team leagues, and could even be a dynamite DFS play moving forward.
Speaking of being a dynamite DFS play, who would've figured that Stefon Diggs would sit atop the wide receiver rankings heading into Monday Night Football? Finding an immediate connection with Bradford in Minnesota, Diggs caught nine passes for 182 yards and two scores against the Packers.
He was oddly joined in the top five receiver rankings by Travis Benjamin, Kelvin Benjamin, Corey Coleman and Eric Decker.
For Travis Benjamin, his Week 2 performance was the complete antithesis of what we saw in his San Diego Chargers debut last week. After putting up just 32 yards on eight targets against the Chiefs, Benjamin exploded with six receptions for a 6-115-2 split against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He did all that on six targets.
Speaking of exploding, fantasy points were aplenty in Oakland as the Atlanta Falcons outlasted the Oakland Raiders 35-28. Matt Ryan finished second among quarterbacks in fantasy points, tallying 396 passing yards and three touchdowns. Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman combined for 164 total yards and a touchdown.
Meanwhile, Julio Jones went off for five receptions, 106 yards and a score for Atlanta.
As it relates to Oakland, Derek Carr was up to his old tricks. He completed 34-of-45 passes for 299 yards with three touchdowns and zero picks. Carr has now thrown four touchdowns without an interception while completing 70 percent of his passes in two games this season.
Unfortunately for the Raiders, it's all about a horrendous defense that has the team at 1-1 on the season. After watching Jones dominate on Sunday, starting receivers have caught 20-of-26 passes in two games against the Raiders this season. Ouch!
