The Los Angeles Rams addressed a string of years with question marks at the quarterback position with the selection of Jared Goff with the first overall pick. Goff has practiced with the first team during the offseason but according to NFL Network's Steve Wyche reported on Friday that Case Keenum is still the projected starting quarterback for Week 1.
This could certainly come as a surprise for many who expected the Rams to hand the reigns over to Goff and let the rookie start build chemistry with this offense in preparation for Week 1. Los Angeles had enough confidence in Goff's pro-ready ability to take him first overall, so it would have made sense to make him the Week 1 starter.
But experience always seems to play a hand early throughout OTA's and minicamps across the NFL and veteran coaches usually side with veteran players. While Keenum has played in just 16 games across three NFL seasons, six of those game with the Rams in 2015.
Keenum knows the Rams' offense and already has developed chemistry and familiarity with his wide receivers and offensive line, which helped him complete nearly 61 percent of his passes last season with over 800 passing yards. But the former University of Houston quarterback is not near the caliber of Goff, which should prove to end his tenure as the starter over time.
While Keenum is the projected starting quarterback right now, Goff has all of training camp and four preseason games to prove himself to be the better option to Fisher and his coaching staff. It may not take immediately, as a veteran coach like Fisher may want Goff to watch and understand the NFL from the sidelines and adjust to it, but it won't be long before Goff takes the field.
Given the Rams will remain a run-focused offense and have limited standouts at wide receiver and tight end, Goff holds little to no fantasy value in non-dynasty leagues.
