A day after being cut by the Arizona Cardinals, Logan Thomas was quickly scooped off waivers by the Miami Dolphins. Now the 24-year-old quarterback will head to Miami, where the coaching staff is hopeful they can turn him into a successful project.
Thomas will work as Miami's third-string quarterback, serving behind Matt Moore as Ryan Tannehill's backup. He does join a offensive-minded coaching staff, which is a benefit for at least having people who know that side of the ball, but one glaring issue still remains.
In order for quarterbacks to develop, they need repetition after repetition. Getting reps in so they can work on things both physically and mentally, until they become routine. The regular season has arrived, practice reps will be given almost entirely to starters during the week. For the few practice reps that aren't backups will pick up those reps for "emergency/fill-in" situations.
The reps just aren't going to be there for Thomas to really develop in the right way. Perhaps coaches will work with him on the side to see if they can help him improve, but Miami is a playoff contender and will be largely focused on that. Miami does pick up a developmental quarterback for free, but it's hard to see him developing here.
