On the eve of the NFL trade deadline, the San Francisco 49ers have reportedly sent former Pro Bowl receiver Vernon Davis to the Denver Broncos in a deal that enables San Francisco to move on from the under-performing pass catcher.
Denver will reportedly send its sixth-round pick in 2016 and another sixth rounder in 2017 to San Francisco while the 49ers will give the Broncos their seventh rounder in 2016.
It's a move that makes sense for both sides.
At 2-6 on the season, San Francisco is going nowhere fast this season. And in reality, Davis didn't fit into the team's long-term plans. Since putting up 850 yards and 13 scores for the 49ers in 2013, Davis has fallen hard. He's coming off a 2014 campaign that saw him put up just 26 receptions for 245 yards, which came after Davis held out of the early stages of camp. Thus far this year, the 31-year-old tight end has tallied 18 receptions for less than 200 yards without a touchdown.
Davis is in the final year of his contract and is due about $3.5 million over the final eight games.
For the Broncos, this trade also makes a ton of sense. After losing Julius Thomas to the Jacksonville Jaguars, the tight end position has been lost in the mix of Denver's passing game. Combined, Broncos tight ends have put up 23 catches in seven games.
If Davis is able to revive his career with a better quarterback under center, renting him for a half of season won't be a bad thing for the Broncos. If not, all they did was yield $3.5 million an an additional pick. It's a risk worth taking.
From a fantasy perspective, we are going to have to see how Davis catches on with the Broncos here. Give it a game or two and see how he's utilized before claiming the tight end off waivers.
