Who’s your team? How’s the season going so far? That bad, huh? Well maybe there’s a bright side to the bottom of the league. With many talented quarterbacks thought to be leaving college for the pros your team may have the inside track on one of these future franchise players. But which team has the best chance of landing the number one pick this year and therefore having a choice between several talented signal callers?
Half way through the season I believe it comes down to two teams and I’m pretty sure you already know which two. Yeah sorry Florida, but you are home to two of the worst teams in the league this year. The Jacksonville Jaguars are just bad and are in desperate need of a franchise quarterback. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are just a mess and what's sad is that they are pretty talented. Which team do I think is worse? Lets break it down and see who will get the opportunity to draft one of the talented college quarterbacks.
Jacksonville Jaguars
Jacksonville is terrible. Sorry, but it’s true. They can’t even rely on Maurice Jones-Drew anymore as he can only get them 3.2 yards per carry this year. I’m inclined to think that means the o-line isn’t opening up holes for him because he’s a great player. But it also mean that he has simply run out of gas from carrying this franchise his whole career. If Jones-Drew is indeed on the decline, their quarterback problems are multiplied by a thousand. Right now I think its obvious that Blaine Gabbert is not the answer at quarterback, and without someone to get the ball to their young talented receivers the team will not get any better.
Jacksonville has some talent on their roster in guys like Paul Posluszny and Johnathan Cyprien on Defense and Jones-Drew, Cecil Shorts, and Justin Blackmon on offense. But I honestly think they may have a chance to go 0-16 this season with the way they’ve playing and their schedule. They also are in great need for a quarterback so look for them to put up a fight for worst team in the league award.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
I’m surprised at how bad these guys are. The Buccaneers are loaded with talent, I mean come on! With Vincent Jackson playing pretty well and super stars like Doug Martin and Darrelle Revis there’s no excuse for not having at least one win. Now it comes out that there’s a MRSA outbreak?!? All this on top of them alienating and then releasing a quarterback in Josh Freeman that most people thought to be pretty talented. It’s a mess in Tampa Bay and it all falls on the coaches.
The coaches in Tampa have a team loaded with talent but can’t find a way to win. They have Revis playing zone and they just lost Martin for the season. I can’t help but think there will be a coaching change if the second half if the season isn’t better than the first. But I see the Bucs coming away with at least a win or two since they have good talent on their roster.
Who get’s the first pick?
I think that Jacksonville has the worst team in the league talent wise, it’s just not there and they need more pieces to be competitive. The Buccaneers are talented, but just a total mess. It's hard to discuss because you start to lose your mind just thinking about the situation. But check out this scenario, Jacksonville is able to scratch and claw for a couple wins this season and Tampa goes 0-16….we all know its possible. I don’t think Tampa Bay wants to draft a quarterback this year with rookie quarterback Mike Glennon playing decently since Freeman's departure.
Tampa with the first pick will trade with a team like Jacksonville for a couple picks like the Jaguars' first, second, and whatever else they can think of. At that point Jacksonville will shock the world and take Marcus Mariota number one over Teddy Bridgewater.
Or it will play out by popular vote with the Jaguars stinking it up for the rest of the season and ending at 0-16. They will then choose Teddy Bridgewater as their quarterback and follow him and their other rookies to the light of five or six wins. The Buccaneers will probably do the same thing no matter where they end up. They like Glennon and will probably use the pick to protect him or give him another playmaker on offense. Or trade the pick so they can bring in more young guys that can contribute not just on offense or defense but special teams as well.
So guys long story short, the Jaguars will probably be the team with the No. 1 overall pick this year. They don’t have a lot of talent and they don’t have a quarterback - two vital things in the NFL. But you can’t completely rule out the Buccaneers because of how bad the coaching has been this year. I wouldn’t expect them to take a quarterback though they seem to like Glennon as I said before.
