The Tennessee Titans were one of the teams we focused on when looking at how running back by committee approaches could impact individual performance from a fantasy lens.
Immediately after posting that in-depth piece, news broks from Titans' camp that the team will indeed use multiple running backs throughout the 2015 season.
"I know people want an RB1, but likely it's (going to be a) running back by committee," Titans ESPN insider Paul Kuharsky reported from camp on Monday.
Second-year running back Bishop Sankey led the Titans in both rush attempts (152) and rushing yards (569) last season. Though, he averaged just 3.7 yards per rush and put up just 18 receptions on the season.
Tennessee added former University of Minnesota running back David Cobb in the fifth round of this year's draft. The powerful back had been used as a lead blocker at times with the Gophers, but indications from Titans' camp are that he's struggling in pass protection. That could very well limit his opportunities this season, especially with a rookie quarterback in Marcus Mariota under center. Simply put, Tennessee isn't going to put Mariota in the vulnerable position of having to drop back with a less-than-stellar pass-protecting running back behind him.
Dexter McCluster also seems to be a viable candidate to receive some touches out of the backfield. However, his presence is more of a boon for the team's passing game, especially with a young quarterback under center.
With Tennessee firmly intent on going to a committee approach, none of their backs are necessarily fantasy options right now. Though, we are definitely going to want to see how Cobb performs in pass protection during the preseason. If he continues to struggle, the Titans may very well make Sankey the three-down back, mainly to avoid an injury at quarterback. That in and of itself could make the second-year running back an intriguing DFS option. Again, the process needs to play out here a bit before drawing any real conclusions. If you are drafting prior to the start of the preseason slate, Sankey is the most-viable fantasy option.
