Season Overview
Vereen finished his final year with the New England Patriots as a mid-tier FLEX in standard 12-team leagues. When factoring in high-point PPR leagues, Vereen's value was even better. Though, Vereen's overall fantasy production was limited by the way New England utilizes its running backs. After all, Vereen, Stevan Ridley, LeGarrette Blount and Jonas Gray all got some play in the backfield. That's not necessarily a recipe for success when it comes to fantasy football.
Vereen did average 4.1 yards per attempt and over eight yards per reception. This is an indication that with more touches the recently signed New York Giants running back will put up even better fantasy numbers.
Consistency
While Vereen did rank 27th among running backs in overall production, he was just 44th in consistency. This means that the CAL product put up either 100-plus yards and/or a touchdown in just four games during the 2014 season. Again, this was a product of New England's backfield-by-committee approach. Vereen, Blount and Gray all graded out outside of the top 40 in that category. Combined (if it were one running back shouldering the load), that would have ranked among the top running backs in the NFL.
Best Four-Game Stretch
From Week 4 to Week 7 (Kansas City, Cincinnati, Buffalo, New York Jets), Vereen put up a total of 41.5 fantasy points. During that span, the ultra-talented running back tallied 306 total yards and two touchdowns. Unfortunately, Vereen's performance against the Bills in that span of games left a lot to be desired. He put up just seven total yards on five touches.
Worst Four-Game Stretch
From Week 14 to Week 17 (San Diego, Miami, Buffalo, New York Jets), Vereen put up just 17.3 fantasy points. That's unfortunate considering this is when fantasy owners rely on consistency to help them through the playoffs. It was also during a time when Blount was getting a majority of the touches for New England. Vereen touched the ball 23 times for 113 yards and a touchdown
Dynasty Outlook
Now that Vereen has happily (for fantasy owners) moved on from New England, his value is going to skyrocket moving forward. Joining a New York Giants team that has Rashad Jennings somewhat shouldering the load in the backfield, Vereen promises to get more overall touches.
This is only magnified by his ability to catch the ball out of the backfield. It will give him an opportunity to put up even better PPR numbers. Over the course of Vereen's last two seasons, he's averaging over 7.5 yards per touch. That's a solid split right there. If you were looking into joining a re-draft league, you can expect Vereen to be a solid RB2 option. As it relates to dynasty, don't take too much stock in Jennings slowing down. Vereen will never be an every-down running back in the NFL.
