Top 5 Fantasy Tight Ends for Week 8

1. Rob Gronkowski, New England Patriots

2013 Statistics: Eight receptions, 114 yards and zero touchdowns

It took one week for Gronkowski to top this list. After putting up over 100 yards in his initial appearance of the 2013 season, the star tight end is now going up against a Miami Dolphins defense that has allowed the second-most fantasy points to tight ends this season. Are you serious? If that didn’t turn you, what about the fact that Tom Brady targeted Gronkowski a ridiculous 12 times in his 2013 debut. There is little doubt that Gronkowski will finish as the No. 1 fantasy tight end this week.

Projected Statistics: 10 receptions, 140 yards and one touchdowns

2. Vernon Davis, San Francisco 49ers

2013 Statistics: 26 receptions, 466 yards and six touchdowns

Davis has now put up 330 yards and three scores of the course of his last three games and is the No. 4 fantasy tight end through three weeks. He seems to have found a solid rhythm with quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who is looking in his direction much more often than we saw in the past. Davis will be going up against a Jacksonville Jaguars defense that doesn’t have an answer for his athleticism and ability to get down the field. The likes of Paul Posluszny and Josh Evans don’t really stand a chance here. Jacksonville has also yielded the eighth-most fantasy points to tight ends this season.

Projected Statistics: Six receptions, 100 yards and one touchdown

3. Julius Thomas, Denver Broncos

2013 Statistics: 36 receptions, 422 yards and eight touchdowns

Davis leads the NFL with eight touchdown receptions this season and continues to make an impact as Peyton Manning’s primary threat outside of Denver’s trio at wide receiver. He’s also caught a ridiculous 74 percent of the passes thrown in his direction. This makes him the No. 2 fantasy player at his position through seven weeks. More good news for Thomas’ owners here, as the Washington Redskins defense that ranks in the bottom half of the NFL against fantasy tight ends.

Projected Statistics: Five receptions, 75 yards and one touchdown

4. Jordan Reed, Washington Redskins

2013 Statistics: 26 receptions, 298 yards and two touchdowns

With the news that Fred Davis has been put on the trade block and is likely to be out of D.C. by next week, Reed become all more valuable in redraft leagues. Not only has he taken over for Davis as the Redskins primary pass-catching tight end, he’s put up 18 receptions for 242 yards over the last three games. Reed’s Week 8 opponent, the Denver Broncos, 21st in the NFL against fantasy tight ends. Expect a big performance here.

Projected Statistics: Five receptions, 65 yards and one touchdown

5. Tony Gonzalez, Atlanta Falcons

2013 Statistics: 35 receptions, 369 yards and three touchdowns

Gonzalez is quietly having himself another really nice season in what has been a Hall of Fame career. He’s not getting a lot of pub in the fantasy football community for a couple different reasons. First, youngsters are stepping up and taking the headlines away. Second, he doesn’t have the touchdown numbers to show. With that said, he has still been a TE1 option and will receive a ton of targets as Matt Ryan’s go-to guy with Julio Jones lost for the season and Roddy White still banged up. Atlanta faces an Arizona Cardinals defense that has given up the most fantasy points to opposing tight ends.

Projected Statistics: Seven receptions, 75 yards and zero touchdowns
