The Green Bay Packers Might Use the Franchise Tag on Wide Receiver Greg Jennings
In December Jennings made it clear that the franchise tag would be “unwelcome” and at that point, all signs pointed to the Packers parting ways with their No. 1 receiver. Now numerous reports have surfaced indicating that Green Bay is currently “50/50” on whether or not they’ll use the franchise tag on Jennings. If the Packers decide to use the tag, Jennings would cost them $10.4 million next season. That’s too much money for an aging, injury-prone receiver when the Packers are loaded with young talent at the position.
Tight End Jermichael Finley Unwilling to Take a Pay Cut
Recently in an interview with ESPN’s Josina Anderson, Finley indicated that he hasn’t heard anything from Green Bay about his future with the club; but when asked if he’d be willing to take a pay cut to stick around, he made it very clear that is not something he’s willing to do. Finley is due a bonus of $3.25 million in March and a base salary of $8.75 million. Those are pretty high numbers for a player with obvious catching issues and who has publicly criticised the team and quarterback Aaron Rodgers in the past. If the Packers do decide to part ways with Finley, it’s highly unlikely that they’ll cut him outright and will more than likely look to trade the enigmatic tight end.
The Packers May Move Bryan Bulaga to Left tackle
Bulaga is easily the best tackle on the team, but after poor performances at left tackle by Marshall Newhouse and Don Barclay in 2012 and the unknown status of Derek Sherrod; the Packers are now considering moving Bulaga to protect Rodger’s blind side. Recently head coach Mike McCarthy indicated that the move is something they’re considering, but will be largely dependant on April’s draft and Sherrod’s ability to return from injury.
Green Bay Might Pursue Defensive Ends in Free Agency
It’s no secret that the Packers need help on the defensive front, but it’s also known that general manager Ted Thompson doesn’t usually look to free agency to fill needs. Two players that have recently been linked to Green bay are Chris Canty and Cullen Jenkins, which makes sense. Both are talented playmakers on the defensive line and could help add size and depth. Canty was linked to the Packers four years ago when he left the Dallas Cowboys and he has a meeting scheduled in Green Bay. Jenkins played for the Packers from 2003-2010 and has already said he’d be open to returning to the team after his two year stint with the Philadelphia Eagles.
