Despite going in the seventh round to the Dallas Cowboys, many draft experts had Baylor's Ahmad Dixon as a mid-to-late-round pick. Known for his big-hitting ability and his versatility, Dixon has a good chance to compete for starting time in 2014.
The Cowboys came into the draft with a huge hole at the safety position, as the combination of J.J. Wilcox and Jeff Heath did not get the job done last season. Granted, Wilcox was a rookie and he is still relatively new to the safety position, the expectations for this team are through the roof and their has to be some consistent play at the free safety position going forward.
Many mock drafts had the Cowboys selecting Ha Ha Clinton-Dix or Calvin Pryor in the first round, but the decision to wait until the later rounds was a smart one by Jerry Jones. When you take a look at Dixon, the first thing that stands out with him is his size. At 6'1", 215 pounds, Dixon looks the part for a safety. Although he doesn't have top-end speed, Dixon makes up for it with his long arms and his center-fielder ability to see the field.
The main problem with Dixon is that he is a head-hunter and he can put himself in the wrong place at the wrong time. While he could very well start in 2015, I believe Dixon's greatest contribution to this team will be as a special teams player. The Cowboys lost their special teams captain in Danny McCray and Dixon has desire to fill that role.
Even though he may not have a huge impact in his first year, Dixon has the skillset to become one of the best safeties in the NFL. In a couple of years, an argument could be made that Dixon was the biggest steal out of this draft class. Time will tell if Dixon should've been drafted higher or not.
