Washington Redskins Scouting Notebook: Jimmie Ward

Jimmie Ward, Free Safety/Strong Safety, Northern Illinois

Jimmie Ward has turned a ton of heads in the predraft process. With the ability to play free safety or strong safety, Ward has improved his draft stock. Although he played at a relatively small schoon in Northern Illinois, many have taken notice about Ward.

Ward has a ton of potential to become a ballhawk safety in the NFL, but there are concerns over his size to play in the defensive backfield. When it comes to safeties in the box, there many not be a better one in this draft than Ward. He has good ball skills, but he needs to a better job at jamming receivers when lining up on them. Ward's talent was observed as he was a Senior Bowl participant in January.

How Ward Fits With The Redskins

Well the need here is very simple... the Redskins need a safety who can roam around in the secondary, and Ward could be just that. Phillip Thomas and Bacarri Rambo were just rookies in 2013, but many don't see them being the long-term options at safety. Ward would be a significant upgrade over the likes of Brandon Meriweather and Reed Doughty.

Potential Impact As A Rookie

Ward could come in day one and be the starter for this defense. Safeties tend to take a couple of years to develop, but Ward shows the ability to be an above-average starter in the NFL.

What Ward Does Well

Ward ran a 4.47 40-yard dash, and he is extremely versatile. He has quick feet, good vision, and recognizes plays with consistency. He's a good athlete for his size, and many can see why Ward is ready for the next level. Ward was excellent for the Huskies in 2012 and 2013 as he was on the All Mid-American first team.

What Ward Struggles With

I already stated before how Ward lacks the idea size for an NFL safety. Ward isn't as good in the run game as he is in the passing game. Something to also be aware of is that he didn't play against the best competition, and that could go a long way in the draft process with him. Some NFL teams might be skeptical over Ward's weaknesses, but there is definitely room for him to grow as a safety in the NFL with some seasoning.
