It's not too often that a team releases its starting running back just four games into the season. But that just happened to Justin Forsett in Baltimore after the Ravens gave him his walking papers on Tuesday.
Forsett, 31, was a healthy inactive in Sunday's loss to the Oakland Raiders and had been stripped of the starting job in lieu of Terrance West.
After West went off for 113 yards and a score on 21 attempts, it was apparent Forsett wasn't going to be gaining his starting job back. With talented rookie Kenneth Dixon (knee) set to make his NFL debut this upcoming week, there was really no reason to keep Forsett around.
Here's a look at the move from a fantasy perspective.
First off, both West and Dixon are now rosterable options in standard 12-team leagues. That became apparent with the release of Forsett on Tuesday. Who you roll with a potential starter will depend on heavily on how the Ravens decide to play this.
Dixon has long been considered the future three-down back in Baltimore. It became apparent when he impressed the team's brass during off-season activities. Despite partially tearing his MCL during the preseason, there's no reason to believe Dixon will not play a huge role moving forward on the season.
Though, one has to expect that West will see a bulk of the rush attempts over the short term. He's coming off a 100-yard performance, and with Dixon still getting into football shape, the Ravens are likely going to want to take it easy with him.
The door will definitely be left open for the rookie should West struggle moving forward. Remember, he had put up a grand total of 119 rushing yards in three games prior to last week's breakout performance. Even now, Baltimore ranks in the bottom half of the NFL in rushing offense and is averaging just 3.7 yards per attempt.
With Baltimore ranking third in the NFL in pass attempts at the quarter point of the season, it is most definitely going to be looking to find more balance on offense. If that doesn't come with West taking most of the touches, Dixon will surely get his opportunity.
