What These Running Back Touch Numbers Tell Us

Throughout the 2016 season, we've been doing a weekly article focusing on the top-20 fantasy running backs and where they stand as it relates to touch distribution. It's a rather simple stat. The running backs are ranked according to the number of touches they receive in comparison to the number of plays run by their team in games they suit up in.

While overall touch numbers are more than helpful as it relates to a fantasy tool, this takes it one step further. Simply put, we check in on how much a specific offense relies on its running backs.

Now taking this all one step further, here's a further breakdown of said stats.

Le'Veon Bell is Otherwordly

As if we needed to tell you this following his 297-yard performance against the Buffalo Bills last week. Still, Bell's performance is about the most amazin thing we've seen from a fantasy perspective in some time. Despite missing the first three games of the season to suspension, he's put up over 1,600 total yards and ranks third among running backs in fantasy points.

What's even more amazing than this is Bell's level of usage. Only four running backs enter Week 15 with a touch distribution rate of over 35 percent. Bell currently sits at 44.3 percent. To put that into perspective, Ezekiel Elliott ranks second here at five percent below Bell. In fact, Bell has put up 30-plus touches in three of the past four games. Last week alone, he touched the ball 42 times.

Ezekiel Elliott Isn't Too Shabby Either

If there's one argument we could make to defend anyone picking Elliott to win the MVP is the fact that he's touching the ball nearly 40 percent of the time the Cowboys snap the ball. He's doing so as a rookie. He's doing so in what has been a pass-first NFL.

From a fantasy perspective, this has Elliott ranked second in touch distribution and second in fantasy points. Not only this, Elliott ranks third in fantasy consistency among running backs. It sure helps that he's touched the ball 20-plus times in all but two games this season. That's stunning.

Todd Gurley's Disastrous Season

For a plater that's touching the ball as much as Gurely, he's been an absolute dud from a fantasy perspective as a sophomore. Gurley ranks seventh among running backs in rushes, seventh in touches and six in touch distribution. He also heads into Week 15 ranked 20th among running backs in fantasy points and 31st at his position in points per touch.

Though, it's unrealistic to believe Gurley it blame for this. Surely, he has played a role, but the team's inability to do anything though the air has enabled opposing defenses to stack the box against Gurley. How the Rams add to their offense in the offseason will play a huge role in where Gurley is valued next season.

David Johnson is a Monster

This second-year running back ranks No. 1 among running backs by a ridiculous 63 fantasy points. Johnson has put up 1,085 rushing yards to go with 69 receptions for 745 yards. He leads the NFL in yards from scrimmage with 1,830 and touchdowns with 15. Johnson also ranks fifth in touches, second in touch distribution and first in fantasy consistency. Yeah, with all the talk about Elliott and Bell, Johnson has more than proven himself to be the top running back this season.
