It is MLB opening day, which means many of the daily fantasy sports players will be focused on baseball. This also means that NHL DFS will get less attention, so look for tournaments that aren’t close to filling and jump in to take advantage of the overlay. With most of the MLB games in the afternoon, some new players might give NHL a try in the evening, and this could be advantageous for experienced daily NHL players. There are a few big favorites tonight and those teams should targeted for your cash game (50/50, head-to-head) lineups, while all 10 teams hitting the ice could be considered for GPP tournaments.
We’ll break things down in this article today with the top teams to target and recommended players to use to build winning FanDuel lineups, Included also are a few sample FanDuel lineups.
Top Team to Target Tonight for Daily Fantasy Hockey
San Jose Sharks – The Sharks/Stars game should be the highest scoring game of the night, with both teams going all out for the win to try to keep their faint playoff hopes alive. The Sharks have scored five goals in each of the two games against the Stars already this season, and another five-spot is very possible for tonight. All Sharks players are in-play tonight, with a lot of high priced players to target (Joe Pavelski, Logan Couture, Patrick Marleau, Brent Burns) and bargain plays (Melker Karlsson, Chris Tierney, Tomas Hertl). Any of the top three lines or top power play units could be used as a stack in daily fantasy hockey tournaments, and a mixture of Sharks across multiple lines should be used in cash games.
Recommended Players for FanDuel
TOP GOALTENDER PLAYS
Devan Dubnyk ($9,800) – Dubnyk has been the best goaltender in the league in the second half, with ridiculous numbers – 24 wins, a 1.68 goals against average and a .940 save percentage. He’ll be in the running for the Vezina trophy as the NHL’s top goaltender, and he might even get some votes for the Hart trophy. The Wild are home to the Jets on Monday in a game both teams are wanting to win. The Wild will clinch a playoff spot with this win, while the Jets might need to win all their remaining games to make the playoffs. The Jets might be more desperate, but the Wild are more experienced and are very tough to beat at home. There is no clear top pick in net tonight with Dubnyk, Lundqvist and Quick all possible options, however we’ll give the edge to Dubnyk who is at home.
TOP LEFT WINGER PLAYS
Rick Nash ($8,800) – Nash is one of the top goal scorers in the league, ranking second in goals and third in shots on goal this season, and he’s been a consistent fantasy player all season long. The Rangers are in a great spot to score a few goals, and Nash should definitely be involved. Look for him to add to his goal total, and possibly have another multi-point game like he had on Saturday.
Melker Karlsson ($3,700) – There is a mismatch between Karlsson’s point production, and his opportunities to score while on the Sharks’ top line with Joe Thornton and Joe Pavelski. That inconsistency has led to his salary being at a low level and in games with a strong matchup (like, say, a home game against Dallas), he makes a great VALUE play. While he is a risky play for cash games, Karlsson is ideal for tournaments today, either as part of a Sharks’ line stack, or as a single fill-in player to complete a tournament lineup.
TOP RIGHT WINGER PLAYS
Jason Pominville ($6,100) – Split stat of the day – Pominville has points in all four games against the Jets this year, including seven points, a +4 rating and 14 shots. The Minnesota / Winnipeg matchup might be a tight-checking, playoff type game, but there is still a great chance that Pominville and his line (with Zach Parise and Mikael Granlund) score at least one goal tonight.
