If you are looking for an edge headed into this week’s schedule, there are several matchups to be aware of. Star players don’t often bring out the best in each other when they go head to head, but then again, there are some who will always rise to the occasion during big games.
The Chicago Blackhawks continues to get points and build their lead in the Western Conference. Colorado looked like they had Chicago in a good spot, but Daniel Carcillo (fantasy hockey hero) sent the Blackhawks to their 11th consecutive victory Wednesday night.
Thursday has the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers, Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins and the New York Islanders hosting the Rangers in New York. Here are five more games to watch this weekend that have great fantasy hockey potential and will just be plain fun to watch:
5. Vancouver Canucks at Minnesota Wild, Sunday 8:00 EST
The Canucks visit the “State of Hockey” when the visit Minnesota in the Excel Center on Sunday night. First place in the Northwest Division could be on the line as the Wild look to supplant the Canucks as the kings of the division. Zach Parise leads the Wild against the Canucks who are led by Daniel Sedin and Henrik Sedin.
4. New York Rangers at Washington Capitals, Sunday 12:30 EST
Once upon a time this was a great matchup featuring Alexander Ovechkin going against the top goalie in the league Henrik Lundqvist. These days Lundqvist is the only one of the two bringing the goods. After a sluggish start, King Henrik is looking like his Vezina-self again. Mike Ribeiro leads the Capitals in scoring while Rick Nash leads the scoring parade for the Rangers.
3. St. Louis Blues at Anaheim Mighty Ducks, Sunday 8:00 EST
The Ducks host the Blues Sunday night in Southern California in what is becoming something of a western conference rivalry. The Blues are playing better after slumping over the last ten games. Defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk leads the Blues in scoring and Jaroslav Halak is looking to return to form in net. The Ducks have been shuffling lines to keep things fresh, but their top two are Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry.
2. Chicago Blackhawks at Colorado Avalanche, Friday 9:00 EST
The Blackhawks take their gaudy streak to the mile-high city for a rematch of Wednesday night’s nail-biter. The Avalanche have played much better hockey since Gabriel Landeskog returned to the lineup and almost ended the point streak in Chicago. With revenge on their mind, Matt Duchene will try to take down Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews and company.
1. Philadelphia Flyers at Boston Bruins, Saturday 1:00 EST
Two preseason favorites to take the eastern conference title square off in Boston for a weekend matinee. Claude Giroux and Jakub Voracek have caught fire lately, bringing the Flyers back into the playoff picture. Tyler Seguin, Zdeno Chara and Tuukka Rask lead a strong Bruins lineup looking to overtake Montreal in the east.
