Fantasy Hockey 2013: Three Stars From the Weekend 7.0

The weekend in the NHL saw the unlikely point streak of the Columbus Blue Jackets continue, the out right winning streak of the Pittsburgh Penguins continue and some unlikely heroes between the pipes.

The New York Islanders moved ahead of the New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers in the standings. The Winnipeg Jets and Minnesota Wild took over the lead in each of their divisions, and Steven Stamkos went scoreless in consecutive games for the first time all season.

The highest-scoring team in the NHL, the Pittsburgh Penguins, beat the leagues best defense in the Boston Bruins for the second time in a week. If you happen to have some Penguins on your roster, congratulations. Pittsburgh currently has four players among the leagues top scorers, and that doesn’t include the reigning MVP, Evgeni Malkin.

The trade deadline is nearing in most fantasy leagues and in the real NHL. Your rosters will be cemented soon, so you may want to keep one of this past weekend’s stars in your sights.

3. Jake Allen, G, St. Louis Blues

St. Louis looks like the team that ran out of the gates at the beginning of the season again thanks to the play of their goalie. No, not either of the Jennings Award winners Brian Elliott or Jaroslav Halak, unknown rookie netminder Jake Allen. After securing his first career shutout last Thursday, Allen stopped 26 of 27 shots in the Blues’ 2-1 overtime win against the mighty (pun intended) Anaheim Ducks.

2. Pavel Datsyuk, C, Detroit Red Wings

The Detroit Red Wings won the second and third stops on their western Canada tour this weekend. Afer a lackluster showing in Calgary Wednesday night, the Wings topped Edmonton 3-2 in overtime Friday and spanked Vancouver 5-2 Saturday night. Leading the charge was the shifty Russian center who had a goal (the overtime winner on Friday) and four assists in the last two games. Datsyuk was the best player on the ice for both games and showed why he is one of the elite players in the NHL.

1. Sergei Bobrovsky, G, Columbus Blue Jackets

The young Russian has been spectacular over his last ten starts and continued his impressive play through the weekend. Bobrovsky was one of last weekend’s three stars with back-to-back wins over Detroit, and gets the top nod after his second career shutout against the Phoenix Coyotes.
