Fantasy Hockey Profile: Jaromir Jagr

While older hockey fans remember Jaromir Jagr as the mulleted-Czech who came to Pittsburgh as Mario Lemieux’s wingman, Jagr has forged quite the career for himself.

Joining the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1990, Jagr helped lead the Penguins to back-to-back Stanley Cup titles. Not a bad way to start your NHL career, eh? Jagr would eventually emerge from his superstar teammate’s shadow to make his own mark in NHL history. Winning five scoring titles between 1995 and 2001, Jaromir Jagr was considered by many to be the best player in the world.
He would leave Pittsburgh for the free agent cash in Washington in 2001. A statistical and team flop in Washington, Jagr’s numbers sunk and the Capitals missed the playoffs two out of the three full years he spent there.

When he was finally traded to the New York Rangers in 2003, Jagr got a new lease on life. He found his scoring touch (after the last NHL lockout, ironically) in 2005-06 winning the Lester Pearson Award as the players MVP while racking up 123 points. After three seasons in the Big Apple, the high-scoring winger left the NHL and headed to the KHL and Avangard Omsk.

Jagr made his return to the NHL last year after his three-year sabbatical to Russia. He decided to join the Philadelphia Flyers for a year, and helped spark the emergence of their young superstar-in-the-making, Claude Giroux. Jagr raced out of the gates early, reminding us why he was such an elite talent before he left for Russia. Though the injury bug bit him, he still finished with 54 points in 73 games.

Jagr parlayed his success in Philadelphia into another short-term deal with Dallas. He brings leadership, scoring and a wealth of experience to a Dallas team trying to get back to the playoffs.

For fantasy owners, Jagr could be a late-round steal. He isn’t going to win any more scoring titles, but Jagr can still be a legitimate contributor and will likely be available for a late round swipe.
