Fantasy Hockey Profile: Matt Moulson

When you are the property of two of the most talented teams in the NHL, it’s interesting to imagine how things could have gone. As it turns out Matt Moulson’s offensive explosion has benefitted a team not known so much for doing anything well.

The Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL Entry Draft originally took Moulson in 2003. Instead of signing with them, Moulson went to college, playing four years at the Ivy League school and becoming a free agent in the process.

The New York Islanders acquired the Cornell graduate by signing him to a free agent contract after his entry-level contract with Los Angeles expired. It was during training camp with the Islanders that Moulson would develop chemistry with the Isles young dynamic center John Tavares.

The two would pair on the top line for New York and though their stats would impress, the Islanders would collectively be the anchors of the Atlantic Division. Moulson’s first full season in the NHL was a breakout in every sense of the word, bagging 30 goals in his first legitimate year.

Each year Moulson has improved his game, his collective stats, and the Islanders hopes that they can restore some of the glory to their once proud franchise. The Islanders still have some work to do and Moulson is still in his prime. The depth around Tavares and Moulson has improved and the Islanders top pair could have some freedom if others are able to contribute.

Though he has become less physical, resulting in a decrease in hits, the offensive production has increased each year in New York. At a position that isn’t typically that deep in the fantasy world, Moulson is a must have.

Another year with growing confidence alongside the elite Tavares could see Moulson top the 40-goal marks and put him among the top goal scorers in the game.
