NHL 2013-14 Fantasy Hockey: Drops and Adds for Week Two

End of week two in the NHL season and there are sure to be some panic moves based on some underperforming stars. Claude Giroux and Henrik Lundqvist, I am looking squarely in your direction.

Remember boys and girls, we are back to a full 82-game season. The games are more spread apart and there is plenty of time to salvage a particularly slow start. In the mean time eDraft is here to let you know who you need to bail on and who is still available as possible free agent steals.

Drop

Vincent Lecavalier, C, Philadelphia Flyers

Sadly I added Vincent to this list even as he seemed to fit into the Flyers lineup. Vinny picked up a nick in the Flyers loss to Phoenix Friday night and the pessimist in me believes this is the first of many nagging injuries that the former Tampa captain will pick up this season. If you own Lecavalier it would be wise to drop him twelve hours ago and pick up one of our “Adds” below.

Nail Yakupov, RW, Edmonton Oilers

Last year’s number one overall pick can’t seem to find his groove. For that matter the entire Edmonton Oilers roster seems to be out of sync. Yakupov isn’t exactly teetering in “bust” territory, but his ice time is dropping fast, his power play time is zero and there are whispers that he is a perpetual tenant in coach Dallas Eakin’s doghouse.

Gabriel Landeskog, LW, Colorado Avalanche

With the amazing start that everyone in Colorado is enjoying, the captain of the Avs seems conspicuously absent from the action. Through four games Landeskog has been kept off the stat sheet and we have to remember how much time that he missed last season with a concussion. He seems to be healthy, though he missed a game after colliding with Corey Perry in the opener. Something seems off with Landeskog though and if you can’t trade him cut him loose.

Add

Teddy Purcell, RW, Tampa Bay Lightning

The Lightning have been one of the biggest surprises of the early season simply by just not being awful. Their defense has been the biggest revelation considering we all knew they could score goals. In the middle of the point production you’ll find the usual suspects like Steven Stamkos and Martin St. Louis, but add Purcell to the mix as more than a third wheel. He’s shown that he can sustain the production with a breakout year in 2012, so it might be a good idea to grab the Tampa wing while he is still available.

Jakob Silfverberg, RW, Anaheim Ducks

Coach Bruce Boudreau certainly has a sense of humor and a keen sense of awareness sticking the 22-year old Silfverberg on a line with 43-year old Teemu Selanne. It seems to be working so far as the newest Anaheim Duck has taken the new season by storm with four goals in his first four games in southern California. It looks like the Ducks might have gotten the better end of their blockbuster trade that sent Bobby Ryan  (1 goal, 2 assists) to Ottawa, so far.

Ben Bishop, G, Tampa Bay Lightning

Apologies in advance if it seems like I’m a little high on the Lightning here. Maybe I expected them to be just that terrible. At any rate, their early success is predicated on their ability to keep pucks out of their own net rather than fill the opposition goal. The enormous Lightning backstop has been the biggest reason for Tampa’s quick start. With a stat line that puts him among the top goaltenders in the league, (3-0-0, 1.93 GAA, .928 Save %) roll the dice on the big backstop. He is currently nicked up, but it’s nothing serious and will assume the starting spot once he is healthy.
