NHL 2013-14: NHL Power Ranking 10.0

The tenth edition of the power rankings finds some predictable streaks and one particularly surprising one. The Pittsburgh Penguins are leaving the rest of the Metropolitan Division in the dust, while the battle of Orange County could determine the Pacific Division winner.

Meanwhile, a goaltender named Antti is leading Chicago towards a defense of the Hawks Stanley Cup. The Blackhawks are still duking it out with St. Louis for divisional supremacy. In the Atlantic, Boston has Montreal and Tampa Bay in their rear view mirror as Detroit and Toronto keep wilting.

There shouldn’t be any real surprises at the top, or the bottom for that matter, but there is some shuffling in the middle. Here are the eDraft Power Rankings 10.0

30. New York Islanders-The Islanders won a game almost to tease their fan base, but they are back to their losing ways, dropping their last three.

29. Edmonton Oilers-The Oilers continue to be a mirror of the Islanders out west. They have lost their last five and are tied with the Long Islanders for the NHL’s worst record.

28. Calgary Flames-All is not lost for Calgary, as the Flames have managed to stay competitive with the rest of the league. They won’t make the playoffs by a long shot, but they are growing a nice little team in Calgary.

27. Buffalo Sabres-A win over Boston is the only reason the Sabres aren’t in the NHL’s bottom three, at least for this week. It’s a nice sign of life against a rival, but fans shouldn’t get too hopeful because of it.

26. Columbus Blue Jackets-Last season must seem so far away for the Blue Jacket legions. All the hope for this season seems to have fade with key injuries to Marian Gaborik and Sergei Bobrovsky. The Jackets can skate with anyone, but they are too young this year to make any real noise.

25. Nashville Predators-Without Pekka Rinne the Predators are just an average team in a really strong division. Even with Rinne set to return within the next month, there isn’t enough talent on the roster to make up the lost ground.

24. Ottawa Senators-The Senators continue to spiral downward as one of the biggest disappointments this year. A closed door meeting after their most recent debacle against New Jersey included general manager Brian Murray. I imagine it was a "come to Jesus" type of conversation, but the Sens are in danger of playing themselves out of playoff range.

23. Winnipeg Jets-The Jets are Nashville of Manitoba minus the all-world goaltender (Rinne). They aren’t going anywhere in the rugged Central Division, but hopefully they have an offseason plan to improve their club. Side note: Shouldn’t Evander Kane be trying just a little bit harder?

22. New York Rangers-Too much talent on this team to be so inconsistent. If the Rangers even get to the playoffs, they’ll be gone in four games. They need to make some wholesale changes if things don’t improve on Broadway.

21. Detroit Red Wings-It’s fashionable to call Ken Holland one of the smartest general managers in the league. However, this year’s edition of the Detroit Red Wings is seriously flawed. Injuries aside, there is a lot of old and expensive fat that needs to be trimmed off the roster. Too much talent in Grand Rapids right now for a Detroit team that looks indifferent every other night.

20. Florida Panthers-Five wins in a row have south Florida wondering when they got a hockey team. Peter Horacek has done a great job since taking over as head coach. The team plays loose and aggressive an actually looks like they could be dangerous in a year or two.

19. New Jersey Devils-Lou Lamoreillo must have known how much Jaromir Jagr had left in the tank. After all, he employs a 43-year old goaltender in Martin Brodeur that can still pitch a shutout on any given night. The Devils might miss the playoffs, but the fact that they are even in the discussion is a testament to the New Jersey brass.

18. Toronto Maple Leafs-The Leafs are teetering on the cusp of being a disappointment after losing 10 of their last 14 games. Coach Randy Carlyle still hasn’t settled on a number one goaltender, and for good reason. There appears to be a lack of leadership in the Maple Leafs locker room and it shows with the lack of energy and fire that Toronto shows on the ice far too frequently.

17. Carolina Hurricanes-As the current tenants of fourth place in the miserable Metropolitan Division, the Canes sit one point out of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. There is plenty of time for that to change of course, but the Canes have taken points in seven of their last eight games primarily using their backup goaltender.

16. Philadelphia Flyers-Could Craig Berube be a candidate for the Jack Adams award or is he the beneficiary of the Flyers actually playing well? I choose to think it’s the latter, all due respect to the “Chief” behind the bench. Claude Giroux is becoming the player he’s expected to be and the offense seems to be waking up to support the surprisingly stellar goaltending play.

15. Minnesota Wild-It’s pretty obvious that the Wild are a completely different team with Josh Harding in goal. Unfortunately Minnesota’s best player is out until after Christmas so Minnesota will need to hold serve until Harding is back in net.

14. Phoenix Coyotes-The Coyotes are still in “feel good story” territory, but they were also looking like a playoff team at one point. They are currently on the outside of the playoff bubble, but are capable of catching a few teams in front of them.

13. San Jose Sharks-Unless they start winning soon, San Jose has to wonder if this is the team that they are going to be moving forward. They have been lapped by Anaheim and Los Angeles, with Vancouver fast approaching. There is no question that they have the talent, but potential is the word that gets coaches fired.

12. Vancouver Canucks-After winning seven straight games, the Canucks have lost their last two. They are still in good standing in the Pacific division and are within striking distance of the slumping San Jose Sharks.

11. Montreal Canadiens-Montreal was feeling pretty good about themselves before they ran into an angry St. Louis team Thursday night. Montreal can measure itself against teams like the Blues to determine how far they need to go before they can be a real contender in the east.

10. Dallas Stars-With wins over Colorado and Vancouver this week, Dallas is doing its best to keep pace in the tough Central Division. Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn are the leaders on offense with a sizable gap in production between the top two and the rest of the roster.

9. Washington Capitals-I’ve said all along that the Capitals will only go as far as Alexander Ovechkin can carry them, but so far, their captain has them sitting pretty in the east. They are 14 points behind first place Pittsburgh with three games in hand. If they can get consistent goaltending, the Capitals could be a dark horse in the east.

8. Colorado Avalanche-It’s easy to count out the Avalanche as we all expected them to slide down the standings, yet they still sit in the top tier of NHL teams. At some point we need to recognize that this team is actually pretty good. The goaltending is where it starts with Colorado, but they have also been dangerous on offense with Matt Duchene leading the way.

7. Tampa Bay Lightning-It’s easy to feel good about the Tampa Bay team playing without their fallen star. The biggest story for the Lightning has been the defense and the play of goaltender Ben Bishop. Ageless Martin St. Louis continues to be the driving force on offence with 33 points in 35 games.

6. Boston Bruins-Before Thursday night’s stunner loss to Buffalo, Boston had won seven of ten. Their defense is still the best in the east, but the offense has sputtered a bit, topping the three-goal mark only twice in that span. The Bruins are still the team to beat in the Atlantic, but Montreal is pushing them now.

5. St. Louis Blues-The Blues have started to spin their wheels a little bit, but are still one of the top teams in the NHL. Despite only five wins in their last ten games, the Blues have games against Edmonton and Calgary to cure their recent mediocrity.

4. Los Angeles Kings-The Kings have been pretty unstoppable ever since I declared them dead in the water after Jonathan Quick’s injury. They have won eight of nine behind the strength of backup goaltenders Martin Jones and Ben Scrivens. The bad news for the Western Conference is that Los Angeles has figure out how to score. Only once in December has Los Angeles been held to under three goals (3-1 loss in Chicago).

3. Chicago Blackhawks-No Corey Crawford? No problem for the high-scoring Hawks who have supported Antti Raanta in goal. Hmmm, another Finnish goaltender named Antti in Chicago? The last time that happened, the Blackhawks were beating the Flyers courtesy of Patrick Kane and his magical walk-off goal.

2. Anaheim Ducks-The Ducks have won their last six games with their three headed monster in goal and dynamic duo of Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf. The battle in the Pacific division will come down to the Ducks and Kings and the hatred between the two clubs could be fantastically venomous.

1. Pittsburgh Penguins-The Penguins have opened up a 14-point division lead over second place Washington. They have won six straight and nine of ten games. Did I mention that they are playing without four of their top six defensemen and Evgeni Malkin?
