NHL 2013-14: Not-So-Far-Fetched Trade Deadline Deals That We Would Love To See

The NHL trade deadline officially sits at 3 p.m. EST on Wednesday March 5th. There have already been some big names that have changed zip codes to this point with several more big names set to join them in the next stage of their career.

Buyers and sellers cannot be readily identified as almost every team in the NHL seems to have their hand in some type transaction as the final hours whittle away. Even Edmonton has been active over the past few days, shipping Ilya Bryzgalov to Minnesota for a draft pick, then flipping said pick to acquire Viktor Fasth from Anaheim to back up their goaltender of the (near) future Ben Scrivens.

These relatively minor deals that are taking place up until Wednesday look an awful like an ornate set of dominos set to fall as the bigger sexier blockbuster deals come to light on Wednesday afternoon. By the time this article is published there will be several moves that will leave us all scratching our heads and some that will have us declaring ____________ as the new favorites to win the Stanley Cup. Remember how that worked out for Ray Shero and his Pittsburgh Penguins last year?

Here are ten deals that I would love to see go down involving players that are either rumored to be available or have (allegedly) requested a trade. They are based on the needs of each team and would absolutely happen if some general managers out there had some more testicular fortitude, or whatever Vancouver’s Mike Gillis was drinking yesterday. Then again, my job isn’t on the line if the deal doesn’t work out.

Martin St. Louis, RW, Tampa Bay Lightning to Toronto for Nazem Kadri, C.

This deal sends two unhappy stars to playoff teams in the same conference, a sure sign that it will never happen. St. Louis is still pissed about his Olympic omission apparently and Toronto has been looking for any reason to get Kadri out of town. The talented but temperamental center could certainly use a change of scenery.

Ryan Callahan, RW, New York Rangers to Colorado for Paul Stastny, C.

The Rangers and Avalanche could help each other out with star players that they have been shopping. My gut tells me that Callahan will reach an 11th hour deal to stay on Broadway, but the Avs are keen on unloading Stastny who is the surplus center on Colorado’s roster.

Marian Gaborik, RW, Columbus Blue Jackets to Los Angeles Kings for Tyler Toffoli, C and Matt Frattin, RW

Gaborik’s name has popped up all over the place and could be jettisoned by tomorrow’s deadline. Columbus has shown they can win without him, so why not relieve some cap money and get value in return. Toffoli and Frattin have been battling for ice time on a talented Los Angeles bench and would relish a chance to play in Columbus.

Ryan Kesler, C/RW and Alexander Edler, D, Vancouver Canucks to Detroit Red Wings for Johan Franzen, RW Kyle Quincey, D and Detroit’s first round pick in 2014.

Kesler is rumored to be hot and heavy for a Pennsylvania team (Pittsburgh or Philadelphia) but I say why not come home(ish) to Hockeytown? Vancouver desperately wants a center in return which could force Ken Holland’s hand if he wants to get a deal done. The Wings need a defenseman badly and Kesler would certainly help in Henrik Zetterberg’s absence.

Evander Kane, RW, Winnipeg Jets to Pittsburgh Penguins for Brandon Sutter and Simon Despres.

Pittsburgh won the Jarome Iginla sweepstakes last year and could really win the deadline battle again with a younger, better version of the future Hall of Famer in Kane. Though he often seems unmotivated, joining a perennial power with the world’s best player might put some fire in his socks.

Jaroslav Halak, G, Buffalo Sabres to Washington Capitals for Martin Erat, Michal Neuvirth and the Caps 2014 2nd round pick.

Erat got shipped off to Phoenix in a “meh” type deal already, but I think that the Caps would have been better served going after Buffalo’s newest disgruntled goaltender. Halak was a stud in Montreal and St. Louis and would certainly be an upgrade over either Neuvirth or Braden Holtby.

Chris Stewart, RW, Buffalo to Detroit Red Wings for Mikael Samuelsson and Danny Cleary.

I promise this is the last Red Wings scenario I’ll discuss, but trust me there are dozens more. Stewart fill a role in Detroit that the Wings were hoping Jordin Tootoo could provide. For whatever reason Tootoo has been exiled to Grand Rapids, while the Detroit lineup plays without a tough, hard-nosed wing that can play with a burr in his ass. There is no way in heel Buffalo would even consider taking on Cleary or Samuelsson anyway.

Antoine Vermette, C and Keith Yandle, D, Phoenix Coyotes to Tampa Bay Lightning for Ryan Malone, LW Slater Koekkoek and Teddy Purcell or to Boston for Carl Soderberg, C and Loui Eriksson, RW/LW.

Ok, so there’s an either or here. Phoenix packages two of their top assets and about $9 million in salary to a contender in the Eastern Conference. Boston needs a defenseman more than Tampa, but don’t think that Steve Yzerman won’t look to inject some life into the Lightning for a playoff run.

Jaromir Jagr, RW/LW, New Jersey Devils to Montreal Canadiens for Lars Eller and Douglas Murray

Jagr has stated that he isn’t interested in moving at the deadline this season, but his offense and experience would be a nice addition to a young, inexperienced Montreal lineup. Plus, Montreal is one of the few teams left in the NHL that Jagr hasn’t already played for anyway.

Jordan Eberle, RW and Nail Yakupov, RW/LW, Edmonton Oilers to Dallas for Ray Whitney, RW and Shawn Horcoff, C.

This is probably the least likely trade scenario but the Oilers need to blow up that ship and start again. They could convince Dallas to eat some of the salary from the high-priced veterans, especially since Horcoff has another year on his ridiculous $5.5 million cap hit. The deal makes the Stars better for now and for the future with Eberle locked in for the next five years and Yakupov still on his rookie contract.
