The 2014 NHL Draft is only a week away and while most teams are configuring their salary caps and potential buyouts, there are a crop of young wingers looking to make their name in the NHL.
It will be a few years before these young pups cut their teeth and become a salary cap consideration for their future employers. However there is still a chance for some 2014 rookies to shine and be difference makers.
There are no players that jump off the page like a future Ovechkin, Malkin, Stamkos or Crosby. However, given the gap that has been closing over the past few years, there are any number of players that can successfully transition from the juniors to the NHL.
The core of the big name talent is up the middle but here are five players that could be the future stars of the NHL.
Michael Dal Colle, Oshawa (OHL)
Arguably the top winger available in the draft, Dal Colle needs to fill out his 6’2 frame to win the battles in the NHL. Gifted with exceptional hands, Dal Colle is projected to be a power-forward type at the next level.
Nick Ritchie, Peterborough (OHL)
Ritchie is a brute of a man-child with his size and strength. He has a big shot and surprisingly nimble feet. He has a big body built for the rigors of the NHL, but has struggled to stay healthy which could be a red flag.
William Nylander, Sodertalje (SWE)
Though he is smaller in stature, many have Nylander pegged as the most complete player in the draft. He is quick, with great hands and a quick release. His vision on the ice is unparalleled but will need some time to assimilate to the North American game.
Brendan Perlini, Niagara (OHL)
Perlini provides the tremendous combination of size and speed that puts a scare in to defensemen. He has the size and reach to be elite at the next level, but needs to use his big body more consistently to be an impact player.
Kasperi Kapanen, KalPa (FIN)
Kapanen has played the last two seasons with his former NHL-playing father, Sami in the Finnish Elite League. He might not be the second coming of the “Finnish Flash”, Teemu Selanne, but Kapanen is the top-rated European skater because of his elite level offensive talents. He won’t overwhelm with size, but has good speed and exceptional vision and touch on the ice.
