NHL Offseason 2014: Pittsburgh Penguins Wish List for the Summer

The Pittsburgh Penguins could have some big free agents coming to town this summer with all of the changes they are going to make. Who is on their wish list? Let’s see.

Ryan Kesler, C- Ryan Kesler could very well end up on the Penguins roster come next season if the Canucks want to start the rebuild phase. Former General Manager Ray Shero pushed really hard to acquire Kesler but former Vancouver GM Mike Gillis decided to hold onto him for a final push to the playoffs. Acquiring Kesler would probably take Brandon Sutter, a first round draft choice and a top prospect or two. Possibly substitute James Neal in for Sutter. Honestly, I’d love to see Kesler in the black and white. Pittsburgh would revisit the three center model that won them the cup in 2009 when they had Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Jordan Staal. Kesler would be a significant upgrade over Staal offensively while providing a great defensive matchup.

Evander Kane, LW- Winnipeg could also try to move one of their star players this offseason and Kane is the odd man out. He is a proven goal scorer who is physical and can play top minutes. It would take James Neal and another player on the Penguins roster to probably get Evander Kane. Kane is considered an upgrade over Neal and could reach his full potential playing with Pittsburgh’s stars. He’d most likely play on Malkin’s line if he were traded to Pittsburgh. We’ll see if the new General Manager of Pittsburgh tries to kick the tires on Kane this offseason.

Matt Niskanen, D- I’m going to go in house on this one. Matt Niskanen has played for the Penguins the past few seasons now and he really was outstanding this year. It’s hard to believe Niskanen was the subject of trade rumors before the season. After turning in his best offensive season to date, he will be due a significant pay raise. He’s going to get a lot of good offers on the open market and it’s going to take a lot to sign him. Hopefully he will take a discount to stay in Pittsburgh.

Mike Cammalleri, RW- Cammalleri would also look good in a Penguins sweater. He’s been a Penguins killer ever since the playoff series against Montreal in 2010. He’s been good in Calgary but will likely look to sign with a contender now that he is a free agent. He is a proven scorer and would most likely play on either Crosby’s or Malkin’s line depending on where the coach puts him.
