NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs 2014: Daily Picks for May 5, 2014

There is no time to rest in the Stanley Cup Playoffs as the Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Rangers roll right into Monday following the Penguins 3-0 Sunday night triumph. The Pens may have evened the series, but have still surrendered the home ice advantage to their Atlantic Division rivals.

The same is true out west as the Kings stole Game 1 in the dying seconds of regulation, before Marian Gaborik put an exclamation point on his game tying goal with a game winner eight minutes in to the extra period. The first of what promises to be many hard fought games between the southern California neighbors lived up to the hype featuring 95 hits and 71 shots.

Both Jonathan Quick and Jonas Hiller were outstanding in goal, but it was Gaborik’s silky hands that stole the show. With just seven ticks on the clock the Czech sniper used some nifty hand-eye coordination to redirect a desperate airborne pass from Mike Richards past a sprawling Hiller. In overtime Gaborik was on the receiving end of a saucy feed from Anze Kopitar, who had a hand in all three Los Angeles goals.

Game 2 is an opportunity for the Ducks to gain a measure of revenge after conceding the series opener. Meanwhile on Broadway, the Pens and Rangers will look to seize momentum and a 2-1 series advantage moving forward.

Pittsburgh at New York (series tied 1-1)

So far the defense has ruled this series with neither club able to generate any consistent offense. Sidney Crosby was buzzing Sunday night but had little to show for his efforts in the Penguin win. Eventually the puck will start bouncing his way, or at least that is the hope of the Penguin faithful. With so much talent on offense for both teams, it has been the goaltending and defense that has taken center stage.

Confidence appears to have been restored in the Pittsburgh net with Marc-Andre Fleury outstanding in Game 2 setting a franchise mark for postseason shutouts. At the other end of the ice Henrik Lundqvist has done everything asked of him in the Rangers’ net. Madison Square Garden will be alive and loud Monday night and the Rangers will jump back out in front. Crosby nets his first two goals of the series, but it won’t be enough. Rangers 3-2

Los Angeles at Anaheim (Kings lead 1-0)

The Ducks have to be furious after letting Game 1 slip through their….webbed feet…skates….gloved wings? Whatever metaphor you would like to use for what happened in the dying seconds of the series opener, Anaheim will certainly come out angry for Game 2. The Kings continue to defy logic and all the odds, seizing every opportunity and making the most of them.

Expect another huge game from Jonathan Quick, but he can’t do it by himself. Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry will need to step up big in Game 2 or this series is as good as done. The goaltending concerns for Anaheim in round one seem to have taken care of themselves for now, and Hiller was solid in Game 1. Los Angeles will finally lose a game, but they’ll be happy to return to the Staples Center tied at a game apiece. Ducks 3-1
