The Los Angeles Kings have now won six straight games. After looking like they were more interested in setting up golf outings halfway through the first round, Los Angeles has gone on a run that has many comparing this team to the 2012 Stanley Cup champs.
There is still time to salvage the series if you are a fan of the Anaheim Ducks. There is still plenty of talent on the roster and some prideful veterans that won’t go away without a fight.
There are certain keys to the series that will help it turn in favor of the Ducks or help the Kings close things out. With plenty of hockey left to play we’ll see if Los Angeles can stay hot or if the Ducks will postpone their plans to fly (further) south for the winter. Sorry, couldn’t resist.
1.Anaheim needs to keep shooting to have a chance
Jonathan Quick has been amazing since Game 3 of the first round, but he is human, and the Ducks need to make him work harder each game. Pucks on the net, with some traffic in front of the goal to make his life difficult will be a key to getting back into the series.
2.Don’t panic if you're the Ducks
It’s easier said than done and should not be confused with a sense of urgency. Time is running out for Anaheim and their Stanley Cup dreams. They do need to play every shift with a purpose. However, there do not need to be any wholesale changes made to the Anaheim lineup and coach Bruce Boudreau needs to keep his team believing that the puck will start bouncing Anaheim’s way.
3. Los Angeles must stay grounded
The Kings have to know that they will eventually lose a game, but they must be able to adjust when it does. Almost every bounce and break has gone in favor of coach Darryl Sutter’s club over the last six games. While the Kings have hardly been overwhelming their opponents, there is an eerie similarity between this team and the 2012 club. The workman-like efforts and fundamental efficiency that the Kings have been showing will make them tough to overcome in this series for Anaheim.
4. The Kings need to be more aggressive on offense
Even though they came away with the win, the Kings were outshot 37-17, out hit 53-42 and beaten in the faceoff circle 54% of the time. As superhuman as Quick has been through the first two games, the Kings need to do their part by blocking some shots, taking plenty more shots of their own and initiate as much physical play as they have taken from Anaheim. The Ducks are only a series removed from a full-blown goaltending dilemma and the Kings need to exploit it.
5. Stay away from the extracurricular crap
The Ducks have been engaging in it and the Kings have yet to take the bait. Given that the Kings have stayed above board, it should be no surprise that they lead the series 2-0. Whether it’s Corey Perry dumping water in Jeff Carter’s gloves or Patrick Maroon looking to engage anyone that looks at him on the ice. The Ducks have to be more mature than to think that a veteran club like the Kings would bite back. There is a time and a place for anything that goes beyond chirping on the ice and the second round of the playoffs is neither.
