NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs 2014: Five Keys to the Pittsburgh-New York Rangers Series

The New York Rangers and the Pittsburgh Penguins have started their series and right now the Penguins are up two games to one. The Pens have won two games in a row after dropping game one at Consol Energy Center. They’ll now look to win game four in New York to get a cushion from a tired Rangers team. Here are five keys to this Metropolitan Division series.

1. Perks of being a “Wall” Flower

I know you guys liked that, right? Marc-Andre Fleury or the “Flower” has been unbelievable so far against the Rangers. He’s kept them in every single game and has not allowed a goal in 120 minutes. New York is going to have to get pucks to the net and rattle Fleury or this is going to be one short series for the Rangers. That is quite a turnaround from the Columbus series that had left many skeptics wondering what to expect from the embattled Pittsburgh goaltender.

2. New York Rangers power play is non existent

This has been bad news for New York through three games of this series and dating back to last series against the Philadelphia Flyers. The New Yorkers are 0/13 in this series on the power play and they’re empty-handed on their last 34 power plays, which is a recipe for disaster. With as good as Fleury has been in net for Pittsburgh, the Rangers still haven’t been able to get a puck past him with the man advantage.

3. Sidney Crosby’s Play

Sidney Crosby is HUGE to Pittsburgh. He finally broke out of his playoff slump and scored the opening goal in Game 3. Crosby has looked solid the entire series and has been Pittsburgh’s best skater on the ice. He was all over both ends of the ice in Game 2 and eventually we had to know that he would finally score. If he keeps this play up, Pittsburgh can finish this series quickly.

4. King Henrik can’t do it all

Henrik Lundqvist is the best goaltender in the world and he’s been proving it through the past couple games. He kept the Rangers in Game 2 when Pittsburgh was enjoying a shooting gallery with him and he kept them in Game 3 even with a run-down Rangers team skating in front of him. He’s going to continue his good play the rest of the series. Will it be enough for a series win? He’ll need some teammates to step up and do their part as well.

5. Rangers Star Players Getting Hot

The Rangers top players aren’t playing that well at all. Rick Nash hasn’t looked like himself these whole playoffs. Derek Stepan, Brad Richards and Martin St. Louis have been outplayed every shift they have been on the ice. Pittsburgh is really shutting them down and causing New York huge matchup problems in every game so far. The Ranger’s top players are going to need to get hot now as this series hits the midway point tomorrow night.
