Jarome Arthur-Leigh Adekunle Tig Junior Elvis Iginla (possibly the most underrated name in sports) has been the face of the Calgary Flames for over a decade, but with a contract year coming up and the Flames in somewhat of a rebuilding mode, this could possibly be his last season in the city that has adored him throughout his entire career.
Iginla has been a leading scorer on the Flames year in and year out, and despite a slight decline recently due to his age, he is still probably the best player on the team. In his mid-30s, he still managed to surpass the 30-goal, 30-assist plateau for the twelfth consecutive season in 2012.
Despite the fact that many are predicting the Flames to finish last in the Northwest Division in 2012-13, they made some great offseason additions in forward Jiri Hudler and offensive defenseman Dennis Wideman. They will also welcome top prospect Roman Cervenka from the Czech Republic as well as a new head coach in Bob Hartley.
These additions should all have a positive effect on Iginla. If he is put on a line with Hudler and Cervenka, you can expect some very good numbers. Hudler played with Valtteri Filppula and Henrik Zetterberg on Detroit’s top line in 2011-12, and if Cervenka is as good as advertised, the young sensation could have excellent chemistry with the veteran Iginla. Bob Hartley is also a very good head coach, mostly known for leading the 2001 Colorado Avalanche to a Stanley Cup.
If everything works out right, this Flames team could be one of the biggest surprises in the NHL, and Iginla, despite being 35 years old, could see a resurgence in his already brilliant play.
