The Chicago Blackhawks are chock full of talent at every conceivable position. After winning the Stanley Cup in 2010, it seemed like the majority of the team took a moment, or six, to collectively pat itself on the back.
Stars like Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews and Duncan Keith famously saw their production and point totals drop the following season as the Hawks went through the dreaded “Stanley Cup hangover”. One of the players who seemed to avoid drinking the intoxicating Kool-Aid of self-absorption was right wing Patrick Sharp.
While Sharp’s namesake Kane led the team in scoring in regular season, second in the playoffs, his production seemed to hit a wall and plummet the past two years. Conversely the Blackhawks less notorious Patrick has excelled since that playoff year and beyond. As the Blackhawks leading goal-scorer during their historic Stanley Cup victory, Sharp has been on a roll ever since.
The following year he set career marks for goals (34) and points (71) averaging almost a point per game through 74 contests. Sharp made the All Star Game that year and was named MVP of the game for his goal and two-assist effort. Not bad for a guy whose most significant individual honor prior to this was being named “Chicago’s Sexiest Athlete” by Victoria’s Secret in 2009.
Sharp followed up his best season by starting on the disabled list after having an emergency appendectomy last September. Though he missed eight games for the second consecutive year, Sharp’s productivity picked up where he left off. He nearly tied his personal goal scoring mark, leading Chicago with 33 markers. His 69 points were good for second on the Hawks behind only Marian Hossa’s 77.
While he doesn’t seem to get the love that the higher profile players like Toews, Kane, Keith and Hossa get, Patrick Sharp has an argument for the best all around player in Chicago. Especially from a fantasy hockey standpoint. He led the team in goals, shots, game winning goals and plus/minus while contributing some solid power play numbers. He’ll contribute some faceoff wins too and his 81 hits last year are enough of a bonus for a scoring forward to be appreciated.
So I’m not sure how Patrick Sharp feels about someone else taking his tiara as Chicago’s “Sexiest Athlete”, but it doesn’t seem to have affected his play anymore than winning the Stanley Cup did. Look for Sharp to pick up exactly where he left off when the puck drops .
