What To Expect From Jaromir Jagr

Even at the young age of 42, Jaromir Jagr can still light up the score sheet. The Kladno, Czech Republic native led the New Jersey Devils in points (67), assists (43), and +/- (+16) last season. He enjoyed playing with the Devils enough to re-sign with the team just weeks after the regular season ended. Going into his 21st NHL season, what can fantasy owners expect from the wily veteran?

There is no reason to believe, barring injury, that Jagr will not eclipse the 60-point plateau again this season. His point total last season was the most since returning to the NHL after a three-year stint in the KHL. Mind you, Jagr's 67 points last season came while with the 4th-worst offense in the NHL. In the offseason, the Devils attempted to address the need for offense.

New Jersey went out and signed sniper Mike Cammalleri and veteran Czech forward Martin Havlat during free agency. Havlat now joins a growing list of veteran Czech players already on the Devils roster including Jagr, Marek Zidlicky, and Patrik Elias. Cammalleri, meanwhile, is hoping to contribute his annual 25-30 goals for a team that desperately needed them last season.

If the additions of Havlat and Cammalleri, along with the potential of former Calder Trophy winner Scott Gomez to join the roster, can boost the Devils offense, then do not be surprised if Jagr can enter the 70-80 point range. Still, points are not the only area where Jagr can be extremely valuable to fantasy owners.

The +16 rating he earned last season was, by far, the highest on his team. No other Devil had a +/- higher than +3. Jagr also tallied the second-most points on the team while on the man-advantage (17), and had six game-winning goals, again the most on the team.

Even though New Jersey is not typically a gold mine for top-end fantasy picks, Jagr has the potential to be the biggest steal if you can land him on your fantasy team.
