Red Sox 11, Rays 5

Marco Scutaro hit two of Boston’s five home runs to lead the Red Sox to an 11-5 win over the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park Wednesday night.

Tim Wakefield (4-10) won for the first time since July 2 as Boston rallied from a 4-0 deficit to defeat Tampa Bay for the second time in the three-game series.

The victory moved Boston to within 6.5 games of the Rays in the wild-card standings. Tampa Bay fell 2.5 games behind the New York Yankees in the American League East.

The Red Sox pounded Tampa Bay starter Matt Garza (14-8) for nine hits and six runs in 4 1/3 innings.

Trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the second, Adrian Beltre hit a two-run homer. In the third, Boston got solo home runs from Scutaro and David Ortiz to tie the game.

Tampa Bay regained the lead with a single run in the fourth inning on an RBI double by Jason Bartlett. But Boston took the lead for good in the fifth as Victor Martinez homered and Ryan Kalish doubled off the wall in left field to drive in another run.

Scutaro hit his second homer, a two-run shot in the seventh inning. It was his 10th of the season.

Wakefield allowed five runs - four earned - on six hits in five innings. Boston had lost the 11 straight games in which Wakefield had appeared.

B.J. Upton had a three-run homer in the second for the Rays.
