Tigers 3, Yankees 1
Max Scherzer pitched six superb innings while Ryan Raburn and Miguel Cabrera homered as the Detroit Tigers posted their fourth win in five games, a 3-1 triumph over the New York Yankees on Monday.
Carlos Guillen recorded two hits and scored a run for the Tigers, who have won just four of their last 17 road games.
Granderson went 3-for-3 with a walk for the Yankees, who lost third baseman Alex Rodriguez to a tight left calf after four innings and right fielder Nick Swisher to a tight right forearm after 5 1/2 frames.
Scherzer (8-9) allowed a pair of singles and walked two. The 26-year-old, who won on the road for the first time since April 18 at Seattle, struck out six in improving to 2-6 in 12 starts away from home.
Detroit gave Scherzer all the support he needed in the second inning. After Guillen led off with a double, Raburn deposited a 3-2 offering from Javier Vazquez (9-9) over the left field wall for his seventh home run of the season and a 2-0 lead.
Cabrera added a solo shot, his 28th of the year, off Joba Chamberlain in the ninth to add some insurance.
The Yankees nearly were shut out for a second straight day before Jose Valverde ran into trouble in the ninth. Valverde walked Brett Gardner with the bases loaded to spoil the shutout but got Derek Jeter to ground into a game-ending double play to notch his 23rd save in 24 opportunities.
