Max Scherzer threw 7 2/3 innings of two-hit ball to pace the Detroit Tigers to a 4-2 win over the Kansas City Royals, taking the rubber match of the series on Wednesday.
Scherzer (12-10) walked two and struck out eight on 116 pitches - 74 of which were strikes – to pick up his first win over Kansas City this season.
Brennan Boesch hit a two-run double in the bottom of the fifth and Brandon Inge brought him around after a wild pitch with an RBI single. Johnny Damon swatted his 33rd double of the year in the bottom of the eighth to score Austin Jackson for Detroit’s fourth run.
Kansas City starter Kyle Davies (8-11) went eight innings, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out six.
Gregor Blanco had three of Kansas City's four hits, while Billy Butler added his 15th homer of the year in the ninth with Mike Aviles on base to end the shutout.
