Athletics 5, Mariners 3

Brett Anderson pitched seven strong innings and the Oakland Athletics hit three home runs en route to a 5-3 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Saturday night.

Anderson (7-6) yielded two runs – one earned – and eight hits with a walk and six strikeouts as the A’s won their third straight game after a six-game losing streak to move within one win of reaching .500 for the first time since 2006.

Boof Bonser pitched a scoreless eighth and Craig Breslow logged the ninth for his fourth save.

Seattle starter David Pauley was tough through three frames, but Mark Ellis and Jack Cust hit back-to-back homers in the fourth and rookie Chris Carter drilled a two-run bomb in the fifth.

Pauley (4-9) allowed four runs and four hits in seven innings as Seattle reached 100 losses for the second time in three years.

Seattle rookie Justin Smoak had a pair of doubles, scored a run and drove in another, while Michael Saunders hit his 10th homer for Seattle in the ninth.
